Look also for a perfect distribution of the grain and symmetry of the pattern across the pipe. That also comes as a premium: like great grain in a briar pipe. Moretti has also briar pipes with decent grain for $300, and then you see the $1,000 version just because of a better grain.- UltraBlue

The pipe on the other post cost me $600 + $250 for the mouthpiece + shipping is about $600. Yeah, you may see $200 mortas but when you open the box they are not the same. Also, you pay a premium when you commission a pipe.- UltraBlue

There are different ages and qualities for bog oak (Morta) pipes. The cheap ones are 2 to 5 thousand years old (as determined by carbon 14 analysis), and look like a block of cheap chocolate.
