THE MAKING OF A GREAT MORTA PIPE

And your dogs as well. Now seriously, the same criteria that applies to briar applies to Morta: bigger, older, beautiful grain and design, great smoke.

I already said it: It’s the difference between Mickey Mouse and a rat under your bed.

Look also for a perfect distribution of the grain and symmetry of the pattern across the pipe. That also comes as a premium: like great grain in a briar pipe. Moretti has also briar pipes with decent grain for $300, and then you see the $1,000 version just because of a better grain.

    MORTA PIPE

The pipe on the other post cost me $600 + $250 for the mouthpiece + shipping is about $600. Yeah, you may see $200 mortas but when you open the box they are not the same. Also, you pay a premium when you commission a pipe.

I incur an additional expense because I don’t like the Moretti mouthpieces and I outsource them elsewhere, made from scratch.

Another issue is the availability of the good stuff. The block of Morta you see in the other post : THE MAKING OF A GREAT MORTA PIPE, took around three months to be found. And the good stuff is rare and expensive, just like in any other area.

$600-$900 depending on the size. The crucial thing is where to get the source material. You can go page after page on the web and you don’t see this beautiful grain. Of course, the manufacturing is also important.

It’s a nice pair of twin pipes: Morta and Calabrian Briar. A drink, some music, and the party is unstoppable.

THE MAKING OF A GREAT MORTA PIPE

Make no mistake: the difference between a cheap Morta pipe and an exceptional Morta pipe is like the difference between: A driver and a chauffeur. A trip and a voyage. Mickey Mouse and a rat under your bed…

    MORTA PIPE

There are different ages and qualities for bog oak (Morta) pipes. The cheap ones are 2 to 5 thousand years old (as determined by carbon 14 analysis), and look like a block of cheap chocolate. They don’t smoke well either. This one is an exemplary 8-10 thousand year old material. Different than...
