    Why the Pipe?

I was drawn to the history of pipe smoking going all the way back to the late 16th century. It also gives me an excuse to use my flint and steel for more than just starting camp fires. I think I will have to post a video of how I light a pipe with a flint and steel and charcloth....

Putting my 2-3month pipe experience away.

I don't think pipe smoking is addictive at all. Sometimes I'll smoke every day for a month, then I put the pipe down and don't smoke it for weeks. It is more of a mood thing for me...like sometimes I'm just in the mood for a good scotch, sometimes I'm not. All the smokers at my work just seem to...

What got you started on pipes?

I think it was my love for old fashioned things that got me going. I thought smoking a pipe was so much more interesting than plain old cigarettes or cigars...so much history behind it. At first I made myself a peace pipe, then I got myself a briar pipe. I ended up getting bored with the briar...

    Whats in your CD player

I actually really enjoy listening to Baroque music from the 1700's. I have an Antonio Vivaldi disc in my cd player. It really suits the mood well when I smoke my clay pipe.

    Pipe Brands and Types Collected

Clay pipes are also really easy to clean I found out. Just get one of those propane plumbers torches and evenly heat the pipe till all the tar burns out. It turns nice and perfectly white again. I think the history of clays is what really draws me to them. They do have a sort of acquired feel to...

Anyone have Prince Albert in a can?

A have a Prince Albert tobacco can that I bought from an antique store, but he was let out about a hundred years ago already.

    Pipe Brands and Types Collected

About a year ago, I bought a really nice Briar pipe and thought it was a good good pipe to smoke out of, I used it quite a lot. Then just about a month ago I ordered my first clay tavern pipe, the kind commonly smoked as early as the 16th century all the way through to the colonial period. At...

    Straight pipe or Curved pipe?

Volk, thanks for the interesting information. I didn't know that much about the churchwarden pipes, only that they were quite long and had a small bowl. I thought for sure I read somewhere that they got longer than 16 inches, from what I remember they even referred to them as "yardsticks". I...

    Smoking Outside Time

I find I smoke outside a lot more in the summer, especially in the late evenings when it is calm and cool outside. Ahhhhhhh.... I find that my pipe holds a light much better outside, must be the extra air circulation.

    Straight pipe or Curved pipe?

I have very old style clay tavern pipe. It has a slight bend to it and is about 7" long and does not disassemble. I actually enjoy smoking it more than any other pipe I own. The bowl does not accumulate any tar buildup inside. Apparently clays are the best for trying out new blends of tobacco...

July 2009 - What Are You Smoking?

I've been smoking Captain Black Gold in my newly acquired 17th century style clay tavern pipe. It is really nice to smoke with, but you have to hold it a little differently because to bowl gets "piping hot", sorry for the pun. Clay pipe

How do you light up your pipe?

The clay pipes that I bought are not really fancy or anything, nor were they really expensive. They are rather simple, as most were, and are of the same basic type and design that were used all the way back to the late 1500's. At the time, they were actually considered "throw away" pipes because...

How do you light up your pipe?

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic... I get the impression from some people that they think I'm old fashioned or out-dated as far as me smoking a tobacco pipe versus the usual cigarettes most people smoke nowadays. But that's OK, I like being different about the way I do things. In fact, if I'm...

How do you light up your pipe?

All I need now is to find somewhere I can get one of those traditional 18th century clay pipes they used to smoke. Apparently using a so-called "smoker's brazier" with lumps of hot coals in it was a common way to light a pipe as far back as the 16th century. From what I understand some soldiers...
