Dan Tobacco Salty Dogs No Taste?

Put me in the 'It's okay ' but I don't see the hype camp. I thought it was decent but I won't pay what they are charging for it on this side of the pond. That said if I am ordering from Estervals I may throw in a plug or two at that price.

    Stealth Blends for Family Vacation

My cabinet shop is in a pretty busy little light industrial strip and I smoke my pipes all day long while I work with the front roll up door open. I typically get quite a few positive compliments on the smell of my pipe mostly whenever I am smoking something pretty gentle and aromatic like...

    Peterson Vulcanite

My experience with vulcanite versus acrylic is that it is more of a shades of gray than black and white. Generally acrylic is noticeably harder when clenched compared to vulcanite but I have had many exceptions. Some pipe makers use a very hard acrylic (I'm looking at you Brigham) but my...

    Help with Autumn Evening...

I tried Autumn Evening a few years ago and it's one of the few aromatics that I didn't have much success with, at least initially. I had a 2oz open tin that I forgot to jar and found it about a year later. I was going to throw it out but thought why not try a bowl again. It turned out better...

    Black Cavendish

Amphora Special Reserve is a great black Cavendish black, I have a few pouches of it put away. I have been loving black Cavendish as of late. Before I didn't hate it but it never wowed me but I now have a couple of pipes that it really sings in and so I've been smoking it daily for the last...

    Pipe Styles for Different Tobacco

I've personally found that some pipes for whatever reason prefer certain blends and perform better with them. For example, I have three or so pipes that consistently do really well with any VA flakes so that's what I feed them. Or a couple of pipes that stand out with English or Latakia blends...

Cornell & Diehl Tobacco - Recommendations?

I will give another vote for Opening Night, a realky great straight Virginia supposedly all natural without topping or casing. I was surprised how much I liked the 1oz sample of Granby Station I had. It's a Va/Bur/Cav flavored with a bit of Apple jack. I would never have guessed I'd be into...

    Boswell Blends

I really like Boswells blends, both the English and aromatics. I tried their English sampler and my surprise favorite was Titus, a very mild all day blend with a good amount of flavor. For their Aro's both Apple Strudel and Spice and Nice surprised me with how much I enjoyed them. The...

Pipe Tobacco is no Good Anymore/Better Than Before

I can't speak to the really good old days because I'm not old as dirt yet, but I do think that Borkum Riff is better now with STG than it was when I started smoking in the late 90s. I really like the Borkum Riff line and smoke at least a bowl or two of them every day.

Problem Continuous Relights with GH Rum Twist

When I smoke a G and H twist ( I also chew them) I just use my sharp pocket knife to cut a couple of thin about 1/16" or 2mm coins and rub them out into a ribbon. Make sure to break up any 'nuggets' that are leftover since they don't burn very well. I load the bowl a bit looser than a typical...

Do different pipe shapes work well, or not so well, with different tobaccos?

Theoretically, a tallish narrow bowl would be ideal for smoking virginia flakes and broad chamber like a pot would be ideal for smoking something like a complex latakia blend. Theoretically. My best VA flake pipe is a smallish Gr3 bent pot by dunhill. The chamber is a bit broad compared to the...

Help With Navy And Other Spirit Infused Blends

I have a fair amount of SG Navy Flake and I wouldn't describe it as very 'Rummy' or particularly sweet, for me it's a bit Latakia forward but a well balanced and overall excellent blend. Mac Baren Navy Flake I don't find very Rummy either. Plumcake a little more so. I don't think really any...

    Thank you to Sutliff

I will definitely miss Sutliff and their extensive portfolio of 'goopy aromatics' . I was working my way through their line up and trying them, a 1oz sample here and there. Most of what I tried was pretty good. All hit the mark flavor wise, vanilla, Raspberry, cherry etc. Now that their gone...

    Favorite bulldog models

I think the Stanwell 32 straight bulldog absolutely nailed the shape. I have had several and I think the proportions are just right. They are great smokers for usually not too much money.

Who is your Favorite Current Artisan Pipe Maker ?

I don't have many artisan pipes but the last pipe I bought was from Ian Walker of Northern Briars. It's not an expensive pipe at all, a Rox cut Canadian, I think it was just over £100 and it is an excellent pipe and I can't be any happier with how it smokes. It's a big Canadian for me...
