    Bad Tobacco ?

I would definitely stay away from any obviously moldy tobacco, other than fire away. Some you'll like, others not so much. Don't listen to the haters, Borkum Riff, Captain Blacks etc are fine blends. That's why they have been enjoyed by thousands of pipe smokers for generations. I start each...

    Car Emergency Tin and Pipe?

I usually have 3 to 6 pipes (mostly cobs) and a couple small Mason jars of tobacco in my work truck for smoking on the road. I did have one vulcanite stem lovat turn itself into a custom bent by leaving it on the dash on a hot summer day. Also if you keep tobacco in your vehicle, you will need...

    A Stark Warning

I cracked the mortise on a pipe once taking it down while still warm. I did sort of repair it but it does look like it's opening up again. Fortunately I learned my lesson on a cheap pipe.

    Missouri legend

I used a drill press and a 3/4" or 7/8" forstner bit to open up the bowl on a couple of cobs. A steady hand a drill would work as well. I love my MM cobs, my favorite is the dagner poker, I have 3 or 4 of those. I also like the country gentlemen and have a couple of those in the rotation.

    Dreams of Tobacco

I had a fairly vivid dream once that I was smoking this pipe tobacco called Troost, which I had never heard of. I remembered the spelling in the morning and googled it and surprisingly, that is actually a real pipe tobacco, Dutch iirc. Well I couldn't find it for sale anywhere here this side...

    Danish Sir Walter Raleigh

I recently (this winter) bought a half dozen pouches of SWR, current Danish production. The first pouch I opened had a quite strong vinegar smell which I noticed and thought was odd, I never remember smelling vinegar in SWR. It smoked ok, but I could taste a vinegar note throughout the bowl. I...

    Jim's SG Burnt Ends Review.

I missed out on the drop, which apparently sold out quickly but I had an opportunity to trade for some from a forum member. I've had 3 or 4 bowls of this now and I really like it. It's definitely more of a plug and takes a bit of work to slice up, but i like plugs, twists etc so no downside...

On Codger Blends and Their Matches, et al.

I can't believe I forgot Borkum Riff in my OTC/Codger list! Borkum Riff Bourbon and their Cherry are two of my favorite pipe tobaccos. I smoke the Bourbon every day at least a couple of bowls worth. For reasons I don't understand the Borkum Riff line gets panned with low reviews but I have...

Ordering from Peterson Directly when Living in Canada?

I'm in Canada and I've ordered a couple times from the Smokingpipes.eu site. I had to pay duty both times as I recall. I've ordered from the main US site numerous times and I ALWAYS get dinged by customs duties, not just with pipes and tobacco but even with books and cleaning supplies. Maybe...

On Codger Blends and Their Matches, et al.

I've tried most of the old OTC/ codger blends that I've been able to get my hands on and honestly they are all pretty good. My personal favorites are probably SWR and SWR aro and Carter Hall, and for matches I regularly smoke Sutliff RR and Rev Match. They are worth trying a sample of and see...

    Smoker’s Pride

The Rum cured is good as well. Burns good and fairly dry with a nice sweet Rum taste, no bite. The only mild complaint I have with it is it burns a bit quick, the bowl is over too fast!

    Pipe You Didn’t Like—Becomes Favorite!

Yes, I've had a couple. The first was a Stanwell Vario bent brandy that I bought because it was dirt cheap, like $40. It ended up being one of my very best smoking pipes. The second was my Dunhill 4110 Shell Liverpool. I only bought it because I thought I should have one Dunhill, just...

    Smoker’s Pride

I like the Smoker’s Pride line as budget aromatics. I've tried them all and they are all quite decent. My personal favorites are the Cherry Cav and the Whisky. In fact the Cherry is my benchmark Cherry pipe tobacco. There's a couple blends I may like a bit more, but the quality to value ratio...

Gawith and Hoggart Kendal Black Cherry

I will say this is one of the best aromatic cherry pipe tobaccos I've tried and I've tried quite a few. The perfumy Lakeland essence definitely adds a complexity and depth that no other cherry aromatic has. I really like their American BC, it's a good English take on a standard American style...
