Latakia Doesn't Age Well ... Or Does It?

I love cigars too. They definitely improve with age as long as they are stored in proper humidity. I recall a number of years ago smoking a Rocky Patel that I had reason to believe had been properly aged for a few years. It was unbelievable.

Latakia Doesn't Age Well ... Or Does It?

I imagine every blend reacts differently. I would guess most blends do get more “melded and balanced,” but in the case of Gaslight, “balanced” translates to bland, when aged.

Latakia Doesn't Age Well ... Or Does It?

Well, I’ve pretty much drawn my conclusion on some 13 year old Gaslight that I bought on Tinbids. My verdict is that too much aging can destroy the beauty of a blend. The Latakia has mellowed to such a degree that the creosote element that makes this blend distinct has pretty much disappeared...

    Quiet Nights Help...

I agree that it’s a blend that slowly sneaks up on you. What I mean is that I agree that it needs to be slowly smoked and proper dryness. Under the right conditions, it really is an incredibly complex and satisfying smoke. When puffed at hard, it can go unnoticed or even bland.

    Aromatics for Tobacco Lovers

Also, why are Northwoods, Boswell No Bite Delight, and some of the Pipeworks aromatics always singled out as great. Also Lane 1Q (why such a horrible name ?). Watch City ? What are so special about them ? Is the idea of aromatics better than the reality ?

    Aromatics for Tobacco Lovers

I occasionally get a hankering for aromatic tobacco, then discard it in the trash after realizing that a flavored topping merely adds an aroma (thus the term aromatic). I believe I had a Uhle’s chocolate blend that I liked at the beginning of my pipe journey. So I’m curious, what is the deal...

    G.L. Pease Maltese Falcon

Is it true that Maltese Falcon has a ginger flavor note ? I often thought Frog Morton Original did as well. Sometimes I even got what could only be described as the flavor/aroma of a brand new pack of baseball cards from the 70s and the thin slice of bubble gum inside. Am I crazy ?

SPC Plum Pudding Special Reserve, How Much Better is it?

Just popped a brand new tin. I had regular PP years ago at beginning of my pipe journey. I wasn’t yet experienced with how to taste tobacco. (Confession: I once dumped an entire canister of Stonehenge in the garbage !) Anyway, this PP Special Reserve is so smooth. Others have noted it might be...

Latakia Doesn't Age Well ... Or Does It?

This aged Gaslight is definitely giving me a flashback to Penzance, which is NOT a bad thing.

    Mastro Geppetto pipes

Here’s another one of my Geppetto’s. Nice big bowl sitter. Great for Latakia blends.

    That’s exactly my sense.

Latakia Doesn't Age Well ... Or Does It?

So far, 12 year old Gaslight definitely is mellowed. Loses some if it’s edge. Starts to taste like a tangy wine-like version of Quiet Nights, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Almost enters the taste profile of a VaPer.

Latakia Doesn't Age Well ... Or Does It?

I just popped a tin (from Tinbids) of Gaslight that has, I think, over 12 years of aging. Only just smoked about a third of bowl. Definitely has mellowed. The creosote note is tempered. Jury is still out regarding how it compares to a fresh version. I will report back after a few bowls.

    Mastro Geppetto pipes

Here’s my Geppetto Dublin. Just take in that deep but very smooth rustication. Smokes like a dream !

    Mastro Geppetto pipes

I actually prefer my Geppetto (I always forget if that’s one “p” or two) to Ser Jacopo. Jacopo’s have too much going on and are always huge. My Geppetto’s are from eBay seller who was once a dealer so they are like NOS. The ones I have are perhaps the best rustication I’ve ever seen, rivaling...
