    Women Pipe Smokers

Bluestar, welcome, and smoke in peace. Over the years, I've known several sisters of the briar. Almost all are really nice ladies. Sadly, many choose not to be public with their like of briar and blends. The reason is simple: They are easy pickings for the over hormones smoking fetish crowd...

    Lane Era Charatan

Hi, Harris and all, I've been collecting Charatan's Make since I came back to the briar in 1999, during the end of my marriage. I have about 60 of them, a few Roughs (they were not sandblasts, but rather carved as I recall), a fair number of Perfections (equal to Dunhill's Bruyere grade), but...

    Richmond pipe and cigar show

IMO, CORPS is second only to Chicago as a show. It's been far too long since I've been to one, hopefully I can make it this year. Cigarmaster, you need to bring Gabrielle. She'll keep Kevin's table busy all weekend :)

Charatan Select with 4 metal discs inlaid in shank?

I've not heard of that much decoration on a Charatan before, but that doesn't mean someone did not custom-order such a pipe. It'd help to have a picture or two...

Question regarding marijuana ghosting in a briar pipe

Heating the alcohol helps. That's why the retort. Send it off to a good repairman. Let him clean it as well he can, then let him assess it for you. All vegetable matter we smoke in our pipes have their own unique oils. The question is how those oils penetrate the carbon cake and the briar?

What alcohol for cleaning / retort?

Go with the highest alcohol content you can find: 1 proof = 1/2 of 1% water. Water is your pipes enemy. The lower the proof, the more water. 151 rum is 75.5% alcohol, 24.5% water. That should be the backup if you cannot get everclear.

How much I need to last my lifetime

I rarely if ever talk in public about stockpiling anything as a matter of personal security. I trust this government not to confiscate whatever I own about as far as I can throw a Congresscritter's spouse. Since that would be about 2 meters, I don't trust them at all...

    Is Pipe Smoking Growing?

When I first came to the briar in the 1970s, there were tobacconists within a couple miles of my home, and I knew folks at college who smoked a pipe, as well as "grown-ups" who were pipe smokers. Over the past 30 years, there's been a steady falloff in pipe smoking. The statistics don't lie...

    Lane Era Charatan

BTW, the Florid L was in theory only for US production, but I have new Charatan's, bought here in the US, without it (from the 60s-70s), and I've had Charatans bought in Switzerland without it!

Here is Ivy Ryan's reminiscence for NASPC, also by way of the Wayback Machine... http://web.archive.org/web/20000303121951/http://www.naspc.org/charatan.htm

    Lane Era Charatan

Look for the Florid L. That dates it from roughly 1960 to 1978. Get a copy of Tad Gage's article on Charatan's Make from Pipes and Tobaccos Magazine. That's the most reliable source. For an online copy, use the Internet Wayback Machine...
