Mold in Cornell & Diehl Steamworks

Casing ingredients such as sugar, honey, glycerine, licorice, or other dissolved solids can also explain some of those instances. The leaf dries down a bit and the formerly dissolved materials reinstate in solid form, but in this instance, aside from anti-fungal treatments, this blend has no...

Mold in Cornell & Diehl Steamworks

Hi, I just saw your message on IG as well. I’m not sure this is mold, after seeing your second photos. Mold inhibitors commonly used in tobacco, wine, cheese, cured meats, and other aged, fermented, or mold prone profucts are white or very light gray powders. These are mixed with a carrying...

    New C&D Small Batch? Steamworks?

Thanks for trying Steamworks! I am glad to hear it's performing well for you. There actually are no flavors added or casing used. Just vintage leaf, and steam processing.

    Favorite Virginia Tobaccos?

Hopefully I can help ease your concerns a bit. I work for C&D and buying the tobacco we use in our blends is a major part of my job as Head Blender. I think you make a valid point. It would be awful for all of us if there was no differentiation or grading to determine leaf quality or style. That...

Blends With Latakia but Without Virginia or Burley

I would like to suggest Byzantium (Latakia, Oriental, Perique) Mississippi Mud (Latakia, Black Cavendish, Perique) and Montford Point Marine (Dark Fired KY, Latakia, Perique). As for a blend made strictly of Latakia and Black Cavendish, I am not familiar with any.

    Premium: A Quality to Ponder

One of my favorite books. The study of quality and it's defining values is quite thought provoking. As is this thread you've started.

Howdy from the Home of Perique!

Howdy and welcome from South Carolina! Glad to hear The Beast is treating you right. I am in your neck of the woods several times a year. Shoot me a DM if you would like to come see the operation at 31 Farms sometime, since you are so close!

    The Case Against Whole Leaf

My pleasure! Discussions on this forum are always interesting reads and I am happy to be able to contribute. Thank you!

    The Case Against Whole Leaf

That makes a lot more sense to me. They undoubtedly are purchasing tobacco from some of the same companies that manufacturers do.

    The Case Against Whole Leaf

This is an odd rumor, that I don't think I have heard before, and I have no idea where this would have started. I have used tobacco from WholeLeaf, as well as from LeafOnly for home blending, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, but C&D does not buy anything from small volume resellers like...

    Mold or Something Else?

My pleasure, sir! I am glad we were able to get this squared away for you!

    Haunted Bookshop Mix?

Blending HB with Black Cavendish can help mitigate the harshness or bitterness that some may experience with Burley forward blends, and I agree with the suggestions of SWR or SP as well. Additionally, I would suggest trying Pegasus, which does contain a bit of Black Cav and has a deeper, but...

Tobacco Flavoring for Smoking Products: Leffingwell, 1972

My pleasure! We always have and still do.

Tobacco Flavoring for Smoking Products: Leffingwell, 1972

Nice snag on the well aged Latakia! That sounds really lovely. I was just in Kendall, England recently for an event that Gawith hosted and I definitely saw burlap bales of Latakia in their production room.

Tobacco Flavoring for Smoking Products: Leffingwell, 1972

Interesting discussion! I printed this document out several years ago and still have it for reference. Reynolds did a LOT of experimentation to produce this report and the fact that it is public domain now is really cool. Latakia is an Oriental type that has been fire cured. This doesn't yield...
