Dating for a Castello Sea Rock.

Folks, I luckily found an estate Castello shape 55 that replaced one I stupidly sold 20 years ago. I am having trouble dating this pipe as it doesn’t seem to match with what I read online. The pipe is about 1 ¾ inches high with a 15/16 inch chamber opening. The pipe markings are CASTELLO OLD SEA...

    Sanitized and Ready to Smoke

Question. How does one get the cake out of the very bottom of a pipe bowl? I have purchased some estate pipes on eBay that were so clean you would have thought they were new.

The Quality of Tinned V Bulk tobacco.

I have ordered my favorite C&D blend in bulk from 2 different sellers. I also have many cans of the same blend. The bulk has been aging for a year or 2 and the tin dates are approximately the same age (but being that my preferred blend is burly based – I don’t think age is much of a factor...

    Same tobacco different quality

Just wanted to update the thread to say that I ordered 3 more pounds of my desert island blend from smokingpipe.com (where I got the last good batch a year or so ago). Alas, the same harsher and almost stringent taste in the background. From other posts I have read here it seems like perhaps a...

    Same tobacco different quality

Thanks for the replies. Since the last batch had a lot more lighter leaf I was hoping that C&D had not changed the blend. I will cellar most of the new stuff in hopes of a taste improvement.

    Same tobacco different quality

I ordered some C&D Tuggle Hall bulk blend last year from smokingpipes.com. A few months ago ordered the same bulk blend for 4noggins.com. Both batches had about the same age date of a couple of months earlier when received. The last from 4noggins is lighter in color and has a different somewhat...

    GBD's, Pros and Cons

Just noticed this old thread and had to comment. From the late 60’s to late 70’s I purchased around 30 GBDs bought from the old “Smokers Haven”. I worked in Downtown Columbus and could hardly get out of that store without buying a pipe (usually went there to buy tobacco, mostly "Krumble Kake")...

What Is So Great About Castellos

I have been a small time collector of higher end Italian pipes for many years. Have owned 2 or 3 Castello's (only one left). If I may offer my humble opinion, IT'S THE GREAT WOOD.

    Dunhill Tobacco

Hope I'm not ranting or off topic but I believe it was sometime in the early 90’s I started smoking Dunhill blends probably 75% of the time (MM 965, Standard Mixture Medium, London Mixture, Nightcap, Early Morning Pipe, and Elizabethan). They were Murray blended and the quality was unsurpassed...

Why is Penzance the Ultimate Mythical Unicorn?

Back in the 60’s and 70’s I smoked a ton of Krumble Kake. Readily available to me as I worked in downtown Columbus Ohio and got it from the old Smokers Haven. It had lots of Syrian Latakia. Living in a more rural environment I didn’t find Penzance until the 90’s when I could buy tobacco via the...

    Virginia, Latakia and Perique blends

I have tried Match 20 and don't feel it is even close to the Murray 965 blend. In fact I think it is a match for Kramer's Father Murphy. Both these blends have some kind of topping (however light) and I my mouth despises those kinds of blends.

    Fun Blending Your Own

I have a simple 1 to 1 blend that I have turned to as an everyday smoke. I call it TuggleBudd. One part Tuggle Hall to one part Billy Budd. Tuggle Hall is a straight forward old time blend without the nuances oriental leaf which tames the excellent Billy Budd that can be a tad strong...

If I Like Father Dempsey, What Else Should I Try?

If you want to save a bit of money try Sutliff Match 20 available in bulk. I think it is pretty darn close to Father Dempsey.

    Virginia, Latakia and Perique blends

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will probably try or retry most of them. In the last few years (probably because my tastes have changed) I have smoked a lot of C&D Buffalo Soldier and many cigar leaf blends because of the “straight forward” taste I find in them. I only mentioned my love...
