    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

Opening Davidoff’s Scottish Blend. This is a new one for me. Ribbon cut ready to smoke out of the tin. I’ll need to get acquainted with it to post a thorough review. So far it’s mild, but pleasing. “Virginia, Burley, Kentucky and a small portion of Oriental tobaccos — refined with a dash of the...

    Virginia / Burley (VABUR) Recipes

I signed up to be notified when the Burley Red Tips are back on stock from the Whole Leaf Tobacco site. In the meantime I’m going to mix a small amount of the VABUR Base using equal Dark Burley, VA Bright and VA Red. I’ll let it sit for a week or so and give it a go.

    Virginia / Burley (VABUR) Recipes

So far I haven’t found a source with stock of Burley Red Tips. But I’ll keep looking. Has anyone had success blending the standard C&D offerings for a strong VABUR?

    Virginia / Burley (VABUR) Recipes

As of late I've found myself gravitating toward VABURs, I often enjoy Cowboy Coffee (technically a VA-Kentucky), Rattray's Old Gowrie (VA/KY/Per), and one called "Sunday Afternoon" (below). I'm not a huge fan of most plain, straight VA's or the several VAPERs I've tried (they're ok, but most...

What Was Your First "I Gotta Buy 5 Pounds of This Stuff!" Tobacco?

I’ve never bought five pounds of any blend at one time. However my first large purchase was a pound of bulk Nightcap (about 10 years ago).

    Ash

Inevitably when I stir and dump the ash I see that the tobacco is burning unevenly, so I then stir a bit and relight.

Corn Cobs - what’s the skinny?

My favorite is the Laughing King (seen in my photo above), which has a tall, narrow bowl. Unfortunately I haven’t seen these in the past few years. I believe that Old Dominion was bought by Missouri Meerschaum, and there is less variety. I like the reed stems, which are easily shortened or...

Corn Cobs - what’s the skinny?

The quality of cobs can vary drastically. I don’t like the flimsy plastic stems on the cheapest offerings. I prefer the reed stems on the Old Dominion pipes. Very lightweight and easy to clench. I have one of these with a narrow, and somewhat tall bowl. Great for smoking Virginia flake while...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2025?***

I was out early this morning entertaining the trout before the holiday weekend crowds descended. Alternating between Cowboy Coffee and PS Luxury Twist Flake. In my Eltang Basic Dublin.

    In Lieu of Payment

Great find. My Great-Grandfather was a country doctor during the Great Depression, I've been told he was often paid in trades, and once performed a surgery on his dining room table.
