Very correct. The k grading "system" is a combination of factors. For non smooth pipes it's a combination of size and thus the price. On smooth pipes, the combination is, size, grain, and thus the price. The "fun" comes in at the grading time. Castello "grades" in batches, as opposed...

Since the pipe has a Carlo Scotti stamp, within an oval it is pre 2007. Kino, within an oval, began in 2007. Lower case k means post 1982 ish. BUT ....... it has the shape number 65. The precise year that shape numbers were discontinued is something I do not have an exact timeline on. The...

Pre K grading. Late 1950’s to mid 1960’s the pipe carried stamps which indicated sizes. These were as follows; SA, SB, SC, and SS. SA being the smallest and SS the largest. K grading begins. In 1969 Franco ( Kino ) Coppo joins the firm. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s the company began the...

    Castello Sea Rock

Castello still uses the diamond logo so they can retain the trademark for the logo. On occasion they do make pipes ( currently ) with the diamond stem logo. IF one were to send a pipe, to Castello, for a new stem and you wanted the original style stem logo, I'd suggest that you put that in the...

    Castello Sea Rock

I agree Larry. I don't think it's unreasonable, considering it takes time away from regular workshop things. That being said, if a pre smoked pipe was purchased for ... say $100.00 .... then the cost to have a "correct" stem made will not increase the value down the road. So far I've sent...

    Castello Sea Rock

Castello still holds a patent for their "diamond" logo and on occasion still make pipes with that logo in the stem. Thus they keep the patent alive. IF you're serious about getting a Castello stem contact Marco at Regali Novelli, in Rome, or Luca at Tabaccheria Corti ( site sponsor ). I am...

I believe that is possible, if requested.

There is another option. You may arrange to have the pipe re stemmed at the Castello Workshop, but it is not inexpensive.

As I enter a new decade in my life I add a special Castello to my collection. Entering my seventh I has fortunate enough to find and acquire this plateau rimmed shape 44 from Luca at Tabaccheria Corti.

    Need Help Dating a Castello

Thanks, but I honestly only know a little. I was just fortunate enough to listen and keep notes when speaking and listening to those that truly know the brand and it's history.

funpipes, if the pipe carries the Kino, in an oval stamp, it was made post 2007. Pre K grading. Late 1950’s to mid 1960’s the pipe carried stamps which indicated sizes. These were as follows; SA, SB, SC, and SS. SA being the smallest and SS the largest. K grading begins. In 1969 Franco (...

Smoking Ban for a Generation in Maldives

While not in my plans to visit there I thought I'd offer this for your thoughts. My better half, a rabid anti smoker, just returned from a week in Honolulu. She said the only thing that had changed since we visited last year was the constant smell of weed. HI is a difficult place to find...

Old pipe. Could it be a Namiki?

Namiki is a brand of Japanese pens which are known for their application of Urushi based lacquers and maki-e designs. Dunhill "items" are highly prized in Japan. Possibly the pipe was a "test" for a Dunhill pipe with an Urushi finish that was planned at that time??
