Did You Lose Your Taste for Aromatics Over Time?

I used to enjoy coffee and tea flavored with all sorts of confections or fruit essences and gravitated to those things in tobacco as well. Time passes and tastes change. I no longer have coffee or tea flavored with anything. The sugar in the sugar bowl has solidified into a hockey puck from lack...

How is D&R Ryback compared to Mac Baren Old Dark Fired?

I realize the point of your post was to find a less expensive alternative to ODF, so take this for what its worth. Since you like ODF, you might give Bold Kentucky a try as well. It is priced the same as ODF, but perhaps it could be an occasional treat- say your sunday afternoon blend... I like...

    The Dying Swan

All this talk of matches reminds me of a time when paper matchbooks were give-aways at near every cash register and small packs of wooden matches were souveneir/marketing give-aways at nicer restaurant checkouts along with the individually wrapped toothpicks and peppermints. I think I still have...

    This May be Heresy........

When I see a nice pipe with a p-lip, I immediately think, "What a shame"....

    Savinelli 320 & 320ks?

Go for it, friend. I snagged one a few years ago on ebay and it has been a great smoker. It is not a huge bowl. I think most of my smokes run 40 minutes or so in it.

    Question about mixing tobaccos.

I've dabbled with parfaits as well. I usually make one when I want a bit of a blend that is flavored but don't want a whole bowl of it. The flavored blend goes on top and the bottom is usually a virginia. This has worked well with the flavored top layer being St. Bruno or some of the GH blends...

A Stirling Flake/Irish Flake with Less Strength?

Just smoke it in a smaller pipe or only smoke half the bowl.

    Any Blends Make you Sick?

I learned the hard way, filling a larger pipe with G&H Dark Birdseye and not heeding the telltale signs. That blend now only goes into small pipes.

In Search Of The Burley Unicorn

I'll second ADKPiper's recommendation for C&D Kelly's Coin. If you are looking to bump up the oomph, as you say, this will do it.

You like Navy Flakes? Try our new blend Navel Lint. Lights easy! Burns real fast!

    1792, WHG, What's Next?

If you like the smokiness of Dark Fired Kentucky, give MacBaren's Bold Kentucky a try. It is not as stout in nic as 1792, but it is not a light nic blend. Flavor is full and it is often widely available in 1lb. boxes as well as tins.

    Another Grandpa Thread

Don't know if it was available or common in Canada, but my grandfather smoked Rum and Maple. I have an empty tin as a momento...

    The Most Disappointing Tobacco

I guess I'd distinguish between 1) blends that were awful 2) blends that were good for their style, but didn't click with me and 3) blends that were in the style I thought they'd be but they were just anemic. For category 3, which I believe this thread is about, I echo what some have already...

***What Are You Smoking, August 2023?***

Had a bowl of Sutliff Creamy butterscotch knee deep in a river casting flies for trout. I tend to take codger blends and aromatics while pursuing these cold water beauties. Unfortunately, an underwhelming smoke. Nothing harsh or off-flavored, just thoroughly meh. Fortunately I had a savior in...

    Rum Flake

FWIW- if you haven't tried C&D Blockade Runner, its a good rummy cake. I know you were looking for input on G&H Rum Flake. I've got both that and their Rum Twist. The rum is much more subtle in my G&H samples than in C&D's crumble cake...
