1st post, with some background. Smoked a pipe for the 1st time about 15 years ago. Smoked semi-weekly for about 10 years, then quit. Don't really why I walked away from it, always found it relaxing.
Was cleaning out some things in my home bar a couple months ago, and came across one of my old Ropp pipes. One thing lead to another and I bought a few tobaccos. I can't for the life of me, remember what I smoked back then or liked. Decided I would do a little reading, and bought a handful of tobaccos over the last 2 months. I then found this forum and decided, to offer what tobaccos I bought and what I liked and didn't. Thought the more experienced on here could maybe help direct a guy.
I realize, just like my tastes in whiskys, my tastes in tobacco will evolve. I am just looking for some direction. Thank you in advance!
My purchases;
CAO - Eileen's Dream. Very easy smoke. Great room smell. A touch sweet, but I dig it.

Charatan - First bowl. Another easy smoke. Mild room smell. Real light hint of like honey barbeque, with a touch of spice. Like it

Cornell & Diehl - Autumn Evening. It was ok. I like the smell out of the tin. Touch of maple, not sure what else. Smokes ok. There's a finish to it that is just ok. If I was rating it 1-5? I give it a 3, but it has the feel like, given time I might like it more. Just like some different Scotch's I have had over the years.

Hearth & Home - Fusilier's Ration. Pretty much like the last tobacco, maybe a touch better for me. I don't dislike it. I would give it a 3.25 - 3.5 out of 5. There's something about it that I feel I can't quite make out what it is, but like. I think I need more time with it. I have only had 3 bowls of it.

Cornell & Diehl - 2025 Wintertime reserve, "Professor". I got this for buying my 1st pipe in a decade. Bought a Peterson's "Dracula". This tobacco was free with a pipe purchase. I really like this one. The can says "aged Virginias and Cavandish with notes of vanilla and caramel." I have to admit, I don't get this at all! To me it's very citrous like with a hint of cranberries and a touch of cinnamon. Seems a touch wet in the tin so I let it sit for a bit. Over all, very enjoyable.

Borkum Riff - Bourbon Whiskey. Not going to go in to much detail. Worst smoke of the bunch. Better than average chance I won't finish smoking the pouch. This is the smoke that made me decide to post. I would rather not waste my time or money.

Like I said, if those of you with more experience could point me in a direction for future purchases, it would be appreciated.

Looks like all the blends you've listed are aromatics - is that a preference of yours? Have you tried other types of blends?

If you haven't yet, I would suggest trying each major type there is: Virginia, Virginia/Perique, Burley, English. I'd recommend getting a blend or two in each category; no need to get expensive ones, bulk blends should do just fine (C&D has a ton of them, you may find bulk offerings from other brands as well, depending on where you source your tobacco from).

The aromatics were probably by accident. I assumed if I liked the smell I would like the flavor. Oddly enough ? I enjoy bourbons very much and that whiskey aromatic was horrible!

This may or may not help but when I first started I would go on smokingpipes and buy 1oz of as many bulk blends as I could. From there depending on what I liked I'd make a note of what the blend consisted of and then see if I could find similar blends.

It's likely too early in your pipe smoking journey to make firm plans. Your tastes will evolve. I'd recommend you keep trying different blends. Buy a couple tins each of Virginia, VaPer, VaOr, Burlry and English. If a certain genre or two appeal to you, experiment within those blend types. Smoke what appeals most to you, not what other people recommend.

I second @mspadoni on the 1 oz. bulk route. Gives you the chance to try a bunch of different things across a bunch of different genres. And if you encounter a real stinker, no big deal, it's a single ounce. Otherwise, you've got a full tin minus one bowl of something. Then you have to jar it and hope you like it better down the line, or trade it/sell it.

Just my three cents (inflation adjusted).

PS:
VaOr: Virginia + oriental
VaPer: Virginia + perique

You will have to discover what you really like. With me it has taken a trial of lots of different tobaccos, and I still love trying new tobaccos.. Also, what you may like now, can possibly change in the future. One day I'm wanting aromatics and the next day I'm wanting an English or Virginia. I believe every pipe smoker has their own journey with tobaccos, and the discoveries of what you like is part of the journey.

+1 for the samples. Get a ton of 1 oz samples. They are best kept in either mylar bags or little ball Jam Jars.

I have like 60 of them still floating around with samples I got from 2013-2016. Don't be afraid to try just about any bulk blends. If you dislike them now, just hold onto them as your palate will change as you become older.

Welcome back to the fold and welcome to the forum!

Country Squire has a really decent sample pack. Squire has many good blends too. Haven’t really run across anything from them I didn’t like. I didn’t dabble into the selection of aromatic blends though. Tombigbee is one of the few aromatic blends I found I like.
