Well, they did it. Law passed for a smoking ban that’s generational. Looks like the black market is fixing to skyrocket in the Maldives.

Anyone born 2007 or later are banned from purchasing tobacco…..

Apparently other countries have proposed such laws.

If a law was passed, less and less tobacco would be imported to that country as the market would shrink. Seems like some people think tobacco is bad for the public health and impose their wishes upon others.

If i read correctly, the current govt is very pro China (which is a whole nutroll for a different forum). But maybe if China becomes an increasingly larger % of their tourist trade, they will reconsider.

In any event, given the laws that have been passed around the world lately, I'm sure we will see more of these laws in other places.

Sadly yes.
I believe a few ago, there was a similar proposed bill to do the same in America. It did not pass.

Meh not surprising since it’s an Islamic country that does consider sharia law. A black market could spring up but I'm not sure who would want to engage in it being how small the island nation is.

While not in my plans to visit there I thought I'd offer this for your thoughts.

My better half, a rabid anti smoker, just returned from a week in Honolulu. She said the only thing that had changed since we visited last year was the constant smell of weed. HI is a difficult place to find anywhere to enjoy a cigar or pipe, outdoors / in public, yet ... other "smoke ables" appear to be acceptable.

What a strange world we live in now ..........

Strange? In what way? Society seems to be accepting of marijuana use but, not tobacco. Society in general, at least in the US and some other countries, decries tobacco contamination day to day, in public. Nothing strange there I can see.
pot has a higher tax bracket in most states.

Michigan currently has 6% sales tax on pot, and a 10% excise tax. January 1, 2026 a SECOND excise tax of 24% will kick in on pot. so its all money

That's my objection with the anti smoking folks.

My take on this is as follows. Prohibition on weed was a complete failure that resulted in making criminals a lot of money while hassling a lot of otherwise law abiding folks. Legalizing it makes it subject to the same “death by a thousand cuts” tactic that was used on tobacco.
As more information becomes available on the affects of smoking weed, and gets published, expect it to become more and more marginalized as time goes on.

I agree, but it will be interesting to see how the cuts are applied. Any smokers that predate the legalization wave were used to ignoring government  disinformation and other propaganda. They may prove harder to sway.
