I was just pondering on the fact that all the medicine adds on TV include the statement "Don't take it if you're allergic to it". Have we gotten so ignorant that we have to be told not to take something if we're allergic to it or am I just being petty?

Corporate lawyers require such disclaimers as part of liability proofing. Also, a lot of folks are not fully aware of their allergies. So, yes, your observation appears somewhat petty, not everyone is as fully informed as you project yourself to be.

I also enjoy respectfully probing my medical professionals' opinion regarding their thoughts on new medicines.

They might not be around for long. There once was a time when they were banned.
Now we are only 1 of 2 nations on the planet that allow them, per what I've read.
I'd say banning them again would be a step in the right direction.

Sadly, TV is where some people get all their medical information. Well, that and the "always correct" Interweb.

Absolutely...I'm all for banning them again...as well as real investigations into a lot of their products and practices.

But I'm not holding my breath for any of that, even with the current admin...they own too many politicians and bureaucrats, in addition to the corporate media.

There are real changes occurring, they just take time to play out.

The list of adverse events that accompany advertisements for ethical pharmaceuticals always tickle me. For example:

Patients taking this medication have experienced side effects from mild to severe. Some of the most common include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Flatulence
- Eructation (burping), sometimes severe
- Halitosis
- Hives
- Excessive cerumen production
- Malodorous urine
- Erectile disfunction
These typically diminish as your body gets used to the drug.

Possible serious side effects include:
- Dementia
- Increased blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Death

I keep waiting for the ad that closes by saying, "But outside of these, you should be just fine."

This is why a good dr you can trust is invaluable. You have to trust they will steer you in the right direction.

Well, I don't doubt there are some good ones, but even the best of them have limited independence...most now are employees of some corporate entity.

They're great when it comes to injuries...but for just about anything else, if they stray outside the orthodoxy as dictated by the AMA, pharmaceutical industry, insurance industry, govt, academia, etc, they'll be burned at the stake. For people who believe in and trust that orthodoxy, I guess that's not really a problem.

All that said, I agree, if you need one for whatever reason, some are better than others.

Also, the equity investment groups that have bought most medical practices did NOT do it to benefit patients, but to help them$elve$. All decisions they make are made with that in mind FIRST and everything that follows being forced to "fit" after the fact.

They justify that behavior as their "fiduciary duty to their shareholders"

The worst result is the old joke "Heal a patient, lose a customer" is now reality. It is their mindset.

I am the same way. Every ad feels like a pile of lies trying to take my money by subtle to not at all subtle attempts at telling me that I am inferior and incomplete. The only ads I like are old ads and seeing how transparent the trends in attempted mind control are. And frankly aside from that they just tend to be annoying as hell.
Just happy to hear I am not the only one.
Though I have to admit that when the ads for herpes medicines came out I did get a kick out of the formula they used. Where there would be a couple doing something couple do, and the one partner would be talking about their herpes while the other was cluelessly bumbling around in the background. The part that gave me a kick was the voice over would say inform your partner about your gross bits and bobs while the visual aspect basically showed a clueless partner that would always show up for cuddles after the other talked about their condition.

I worked in that industry and it was the most frustrating and soul crushing thing I've ever been part of. Everything you've said is true and you're scratching the surface. I hate how when I was younger doctors talked to you as long as it took to figure out what to do. Now I can tell they're pressured to get me in and out and consequently don't have time to actually listen and figure out what to do. Even times where I've had to stop them and explain why I know they're not doing the right steps and being frustrated that they tried to check their boxes off and get to the next patient. Times where they've written a prescription and I've thrown it in their trash can and said I am not going to do that it's not the right answer. A patient should always be their own advocate but it should not have to be that way at the same time.

About 6 years ago a couple came to our shop looking around. I helped them each choose their first ever handguns.
I offered them a discount to our beginner concealed carry class, they both accepted. After the first class they both signed up for another, and paid for a year membership at the range. They came 3x a week for months. Getting to know them I learned they were both doctors who were new to the area from Pittsburgh.
The guy is a gastroenterologist and his wife is a "family medicine" doctor.
Funny enough, the only two doctors I need are a GI doctor and a regular doctor.
They never try pushing drugs into me, but give good advice about what I should put into me. Ive never felt better!
