This mornings' smoke, after a full day at the range yesterday. Skippable dialog below the picture.
My new little
Peterson, with a loose two pack of
TobaccoBarn's Bing Cherry. A pretty good smoke considering the fact that I had just eaten immediately before smoking, something I normally do not do because I never get the best smoke until I wait two hours or so, especially with something subtle in the pipe. Never have, a fact that was staring me in the face unacknowledged until recently
Tobacco Analysis: Nevertheless, this offering from
TobaccoBarn (available in bulk at all CigarSpot stores in LA) is quite similar to CAO's Cherry Bomb, a little less refined but very good. I know this tobacco well, so in continuing support of Skippy's examination of cherries, I'm also investigating and confirming the suitability of my new little Pete for aromatics. Got the expected 40+ minutes using this packing style, ie fill the bowl, depress with finger pressure to about 5/8 of the way, fill it to top again and light it up. (quite different from the gravity only two pack feed I use with flake and cake tobaccos like Black Frigate, Pirate Kake, Mad Fiddler and so forth. Ribbon cut like Bing Cherry, and larger flakes like some of the Cavendishes of Smoker's Pride, and others, don't in my experience take very well to gravity feed. If you like cherry aros, you'll like this tobacco. Good solid playoff contender.
Skippable Dialog: About the background target. Continuing my quest for middle-of-the-pack target mediocrity, I post one of the three consecutive targets I shot at a full 10 meters, two hand grip with my Alpha. I get my analytical tendencies not from being particiularly anal, but from methodology derived from Chemistry and Biology courses I took at University as electives (I'm not totally an Arty-Farty, as well as analytical theory methods I got in upper level Music Courses at UBC. Now you know.
The 3 last targets I shot, one illustrated above, are almost identical, but in different positions on the 8-10 rings, one central, the other to the left side, and another to the right side. That's due to 3 different brands of pellets. What is of concern right now is the reason for the vertical stringing. Three possible reasons -
1. arm fatigue, not uncommon for 73 year old guys
2. eyesight, as I have to shoot with readers to see the front iron sight, and the target is a vaguely recognizeable blur.
3. the glasses themselves, perhaps slipping during shooting.
To be continued next Wednesday. It's not the pellets because they're all accurate but I haven't found the one I'll settle on - I'll shoot better with the forthcoming red dot sight, but right now i'll work on the three possibilities given. All that said, I'm pretty pleased with my progress. Alter the elevation of that group, and they're all within the 8 ring. That's okay!!
