Pipes by Country

I don't have a lot of pipes (18) relative to many of you, being a smoker as opposed to a collector, and today, just for the heck of it, I checked to see where they originated:

6 English
6 Danish
2 German
2 Canadian
1 American
1 Japanese

Any of you guys make a point of acquiring pipes from specific places, or find yourselves primarily attracted to pipes from a given country? Or do you, like me, just buy a pipe because you like it and find yourselves with an assortment? Or not give it any thought at all, but discover after the fact that you wound up with virtually nothing but, say, American pipes.

I've sold about twice as many pipes over the years as I currently own. I believe the only other country I've owned pipes from that is not on the above list is Russia. Most of the pipes I've bought have been from Italy, France, Ireland, and Denmark. Maybe I'll start collecting Brits at some point. I don't know. I'm really happy with my Musico pipes from Italy and I've sold off a bunch of Savinellis and currently only have 1.

I buy (and sell) pipes based mostly on dimensions, shaping, weight etc. It doesn't really matter to me where they come from.

There are certainly carvers from Eastern Europe, South America, China, Taiwan, Sweden, Greece, etc. etc. that I can see myself getting into, but I'm really happy with my collection at this point. I've got a Peterson on it's way to me right now. I can't say it'll be the last pipe I ever buy, but I sure as hell don't need any more. A few more artisan pipes will probably find their way into my collection in the coming years though.

I've seen some (pictures of) beautiful pipes by Greek makers such as Asteriou and Kyriazanos. Sure wouldn't mind having twenty three of them...or one.

I have some from Denmark, UK, France, US, Turkey, and a bunch from Italy. The country of origin (or country where the profits go) is of such little concern for me.

Number of pipes does not determine who's a collector and who is a smoker. Some are both.

I am merely a smoker though I have over 80 pipes, several from every country with a major pipe making presence.
