How many of you guys were lucky enough to NOT wait an hour and a half getting x-rays after walking into the hospital with a dislocated shoulder?
A problem that can be diagnosed and fixed in under two minutes, and they drag out the song and dance like it's a broadway musical.
This is one injury where I definitely recommend avoiding doctors.

Hope all is well from here on. You probably did the right thing, hour wait and broadway musical and all. By today's standards, a hour wait is practically curbside service. Go easy until you are sure all is well.

Oh man, that sucks, I hope you get on the mend.

Hence this story

I recently took a pretty good fall at work.

I fractured my wrist, hurt a shoulder, cut a knee open, had two nails punctured pretty deeply and came way too close to being a human shish kebab (although left a nasty cut).

What did I do? Well, after confirming I lived, I did a thorough assessment of my injuries. Made it back to my truck and after cleaning up the visible wounds, limped back in and finished the job.

On the way home I stopped at Walgreens, bought a wrist brace and some supplies.

Then I paid close attention to my body for 48 hours.

I’m no tougher than anyone else, but I’ve taken my father, mother and son to the doctors enough to have lost all faith in the system.

Caveat, if I failed the assessment, I would’ve gone inside a clinic.

Yup, I had help putting it back in and avoided all that. It still sucked but was faster and cheaper than the ER. Of course at the time I had no medical insurance and no money so it wasn’t so much a choice as the reality of self help or nothing. Don’t miss those days.

But... it's free, innit?

I broke my collar bone when I was young while trying a bike jump. I sat for probably an hour before the pain was bad enough for my grampa to take me to doctor.

Some injuries are just weird.

Evel Knievel was responsible for a huge part of the local community hospital’s yearly income, lol. Of course I can jump my bike over the garden shed, just need to get a run at it and a bigger plywood ramp!!

Getting to the ER was secondary to getting your assed chewed for using the “good” plywood and lumber to build the ramp, bleeding on or getting grass stains on your “good” clothes, and absolutely receiving the lecture about breaking the bike that they just gave you last Christmas. Oh, now you’re whining about a broken collarbone too?! Do you have any idea how much an ER visit costs?! 😂

Yeah, I don’t miss those days either, lol.

I understand your warped view of doctors, but do really want your health decisions to be self-diagnosed?? Emergency rooms are terribly busy, and they have to run them under triage protocol and the maze of insurance companies. Now, if it were the old days we could just go in and negotiate a price and be done with it.

"It's just a flesh wound"
Probably the other scenario where I regret getting help.
A few years ago I split my thumb on a knife, it only needed three stitches but again the scenario plays out they make you sit for an hour before dealing with anything (I use a rural hospital and the ER is NEVER busy).
Learning to stitch yourself up should be a mandatory part of the education system.

Well, I didn’t add that detail, but I stitched myself up three times in the past.

My family thinks I’m nuts. Lol.

Crazy world we live in. Lol.

Eh so did John wick.
Yeah, except that was a movie.

I was super fortunate, I used to do a lot of mountaineering and my old family doctor, who was super cool, showed me how to stitch myself.

I had a really bad cut on my knee and I went to see him. It was about three hours after the injury and he told me why sooner was better.

Well, we got talking and he allowed me to finish the stitches and then set me up with a few suture kits.

This was in 1981. I highly doubt today’s corporate medicine would allow such a visit.

It really bursts my bubble that local anesthetic is a controlled substance.
Society is set up to make people dependent on hospitals.

Hence my initial reply to this thread: trying to make a point for those south of the 49th parallel who thing gov't-run deathcare—er, I mean medicare is the greatest thing.

God help you when you can't even get an entry-level antibiotic without going through the system.
