Taste and preference aside, what that you've encountered burns straight down to ash? I ask because I've encountered such a tobacco these past few days: 4th Generation 1931 Flake. It burns like a cigarette, just straight down like magic. Tastes good too, which is a plus.

More than the tobacco it is how much dry it is which makes it burning easier, I would say any tobacco when properly dried burns well.

Said that I agree Semois is maybe the one which is burning best as it comes naturally very dry.
In general all Burley blends burn better than Virginia.
Another one which burns well is the Peretti Cuban mixture.

But as said above when properly dried any tobacco burns well. This does not mean all tobacco need to be completely dried out as some need to keep some moisture to give the better taste. Sometime it is better to do few relights but having the best taste.

C&D's Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookshop do this. Actually, I did never encounter any of their blends having bad burning characteristics.

One that I always loved for its well burning and fair amount of moisture in the bowl is Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture. I'm sure, the same applies to the Peterson version.

The best bruning Brittish flake, that I had so far is Germain's Brown Flake.

Best can take various forms, like burning to white ash, or fewer relights, or thickness of smoke, or delivery of flavor. Most blends I enjoy offer one of these, and maybe one or more others. Best depends on what you like. One pipe smoker's irksome frustration is another's excellent bowl.

In terms of form factor, crumble cakes have always done well for me. Broken flakes come in second and the rest is just shove it in and see what happens.

Captain Black Grape burns to nothing but a fine grey ash every time, including the pouch. It’s mostly a function of being tossed into a properly functioning incinerator. ?

Most G&H flakes seem to burn to ash for me, but I’ve had some luck with other VA flakes and even some ready rubbed blends like St Bruno.

I've been really impressed lately with the burning characteristics of Capstan Blue Flake, after about an hour of drying time. It smokes excellently.

Old Gowrie burns very well for me. And So To Bed and SH Cognac Mixture, both Germain's products, burn surprisingly well for as damp as they are, too.
