Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We broadcast weekly, every Tuesday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Our Featured Interview tonight is with pipe maker Jared Coles. Jared has been making pipes for 5-years as part of a team with John Klose as J&J Pipes. On tonight’s show, he will have a special announcement to make. In “Pipe Parts”, Brian will answer questions that were sent in regarding the use of bamboo in pipe stems. It probably goes back farther than you know, and there is more to it than just aesthetics. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Tonight’s show is sponsored by Sutliff-Tobacco.com, CupOJoes.com, SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, Cornell & Diehl, and Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 1-hour show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes and other podcast sites and apps after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • Another great show.
Nice ‘Pipe parts’- I don’t particularly love bamboo shanks – some of them remind me of skeleton bones. But, I can’t deny it, there are some very nice ones out there.
Interesting interview – I liked his initial approach to pipe making, like what pipemaker John Crosby also said some weeks ago, make many of them as fast as you can until you get the hang of it.
Mail bag – It was fun to hear the correction on the German Xmas tradition! Who would think of that!
Music! Wow!! Now we’re talking! I can’t wait to hear the music on the rest of that list!
Rant – Communication is an art – Different expressions could sound completely different depending on the listener. We all could use some help in translating our feelings properly.

  • Hi Brian,
I have had two briar pipes with bamboo shanks and have not found anything exciting about them,
I do not know Jared nor his pipes so I can’t really comment on them. His story is similar to so many others you have interviewed.
Music – “Alone together” was quite the jazzy tune.
Rant – Ones ‘favorite’ is not necessarily ‘the best’, as you said, it is all personal opinion.
    Good show.
It’s been %^(&(%^ cold here in the burg. I had to wait to listen to the show until we at least got into the ‘teens’.

  • Great show Brian. Funny, I usually listen to your show Saturday mornings. I tried listening to the show the night it airs. This never works as I stretch out on my vintage crushed red velvet couch and your voice puts me instantly to sleep. Haha! I blame the couch not you! Music was awesome.
See you at The Briary event on Feb. 20th!

  • Thank you for this interview with Jared Cole. It created a rabbit hole I’ve been falling down for days. Looking at Jared’s and JnJ pipes they are definitely now on my wish list. Love their acorn shapes in rustication. From there I ended up onto John & Jared’s Shoptalk youtube videos. I’m learning loads and have discovered some great music and drinks.
