Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 628

Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 628! Our featured interview on tonight’s show is with pipe maker J. Mouton. Jason was born, raised, and currently resides in Gueydan, Louisiana. He started smoking cigars and then pipes. He is a carpenter and wood turner that likes to make duck calls. This led to making tampers, and that naturally led to making pipes. He makes both classic and freehand shapes. At the top of the show will continue the virtual tour of Brian’s pipe collection. He will discuss three meerschaum pipes that are special to him for different reasons.

  • The castle meer is awesome! I also love the McClelland, and can appreciate the story of the smaller one. Thanks for sharing. (Although I had to go to Facebook to see them.)
It was nice to catch up with J. An interesting “look” into his tobacco cellar, and how he has moved forward in his pipecraft and lapidary work. I enjoyed J’s discussion of the camaraderie and availability among most carvers, both novice and master. Briar the Beagle is a handsome pup.
“Call Me A Dog” by Chris Cornell was both powerful and beautiful.
Your clever comparison of politics to pipe tobacco was quite spot-on.
    Thanks for a fun show.

  • I greatly enjoyed you showing off your meerschaums. It does show the world that we briarphiles aren’t total neanderthals. The McClelland meer you showed off was delightful and I certainly understand why you would keep it. Good stuff. You and Mike McNeil should’ve formed a comedy team.
J Mouton is a carver I never got into for no particular reason. His carving was certainly worth a careful look, but you can only afford so many pipes. His discussion of working with other carvers was very enlightening. It is amazing that when you go to shows all the carvers are in groups talking about pipes. I have often maintained that a reasonably well-trained beagle makes the finest pet a man can have.
To me politics has gotten to the point that it would be an English blend in which the Virginia tobacco is totally separate from the perique. The great American ability to compromise on any issue, rather than coming to blows, has been lost for the second time in our history.
