Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 618. Our featured interview tonight is with AJ Khaled. AJ is a 22-year old pipe smoker that is part of our ongoing series of pipe smokers that are under the age of 30. Interestingly, he wasn’t initially inspired to take up the pipe by The Lord of the Rings, but more so by the author Tolkien himself while he was reading some of his other works. AJ has some really unique custom made pipes where he gave design specifics to and had them made by pipe makers Chris Askwith and Arcangelo Ambrosi. At the top of the show, we’ll have an “Ask the Pipemaker” segment with pipe artisan Jeff Gracik.

The investigation of Andrew’s pipe staining problem was very interesting.
AJ is surprisingly far along in his “pipeman” journey. He seems to have moved through the beginning stages with lightning speed, compared to us old farts who took quite a while to be comfortable in our knowledge of and familiarity with “the pipe”. As some of your younger guests have said, they credit YouTube for a lot of their knowledge, whereas we had to go to pipe shops, perhaps find a “guru”, join a pipe club, and read the few books on the subject. (And yes, I can hear all the “OK Boomer” comments.)
Some fun answers during the “Ask Brian” section.
“Pet Architect” by Far Caspian was a pleasantly lyric tune with enigmatic lyrics and a clever video.
Thanks for the proper chastisement of what is happening in the YouTube pipe community.
Another fun and enlightening show. Thanks.
Dino
The problem you guys discussed in Pipe Parts seems like a better question for George Dibos. Jeff was really thrown for loop and that is hard to do. He got rolling later but it was difficult for him.
AJ seems to rather far along in his tobacco pursuits for 22-year-old. How much money does this kid have that he can buy pipes in Castello price range?? Did you leave out the part about him being from a wealthy family or something similar. Or was he like Jed Clampett – out hunting and up through the ground came a bubbling crude?? Something in his story is not adding up. Is he printing money in the basement of his house??
That was really awful.
I guess I didn’t get what you were telling about us about the YouTube pipe community. I am on the net at least three hours a day and I haven’t seen any discourse like you were saying. I am mainly on the Old Codgers website and very few others. Those guys are pussy cats. Do I need to expand my range??
