Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 541

Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 541! We have a pipe personalities packed show tonight. We’ve been running two different series with two different prominent pipe collectors and authors. We have “Inside Fred’s Head” with Fred Hanna. He is the author of the book, “The Perfect Smoke”, and known for collecting straight grain pipes. The other series is a follow-up to Fred, “Rich Responds” with Rich Esserman. Rich has penned innumerous articles about pipes and tobacco for several publications, and he is known for collecting quite large pipes. We’ll be featuring the final remnants of those two series all in this show. As if that’s not enough, at the top of the show our segment will feature pipe artisan Jeff Gracik with another installment of “Ask the Pipemaker”. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

  • Jeff’s answers made absolute sense with respect to his choice of pipe materials. He knows what he likes to work with and why.
Fred’s wrap-up, busting myths with you, was quite a treat. As with any endeavor, pipe smoking and collecting is filled with folk who spout utter BS to prove they are “aficionados.”
Rich is correct in pointing out that pipe smoking can engage you, not only because of its calming, solitary moments, but also due to the incredible camaraderie of our pipe community.
The singular nugget of truth and agreement from both men?
    Buy what makes you happy.
Pastor Jodah’s tune choice “Hit Parade” from Mutemath was too much for me. Too many musical ideas crammed into one song, with overly arty lyrics that failed to draw me in. Meh.
Otherwise, thanks for another always entertaining show.

  • Jeff’s could have included he would take a hit in the income department. Nothing wrong with a guy saying he doesn’t really enjoy working with that material.
Your interviews with Fred and Rich are very enjoyable. It was interesting that Fred would say something, and you would see if Rich agreed and find Rich about 45 degrees from where Fred was. Kind of like a presidential election debate where the candidates would wonder off on different tangent.
Mutemath, huh. We would been better off if they were mutes.
