Mac Baren HH Vintage Syrian Pipe Tobacco Tin

Editors Note: This tobacco is from an sample pouch that I received from Mac Baren at the time this blend was introduced. It is has about 2 years of age on it. HH Vintage Syrian is not available in this pouch.

The pouch aroma on this blend has a sweet and tangy Virginia smell which was accompanied by the smokiness from the Latakia. The moisture content is perfect for smoking right out of the pouch. It is a coarse cut, which means there are some nice chunky pieces of tobacco. I loaded my pipe and proceeded with the charring light.

On the charring light I am greeted by a nice sweet taste with a smoky aroma. I am also met with a slight tingling sensation in my mouth that indicated that this was going to bite me. That is not a good thing this early in the smoke, but I was expecting it. I was expecting it because I am one of the people that get bit by every Mac Baren tobacco that I smoke. Which upsets me because; they make some mighty tasty blends. There are other people who never get bit by Mac Baren tobaccos, so don’t buy in too much about the dreaded ‘Mac Baren Bite’ that you might have heard about. Try them for yourself to see how you are affected.

The taste right from the start is very good. There is some sweetness accompanied by some nice smokiness from the Latakia. At about the 3/4 point, there is a slight spiciness that comes in. It’s not overpowering, it mingles well with the sweet Virginias and the smoky Latakia. At the half way point, I lost the spiciness that I had picked up and the taste turned a little more towards the sweet side. The flavor switched between sweet and smoky from the middle of the bowl through to the end.

Mac Baren did a good job blending these tobaccos together to form a nice taste where all of the flavors compliment and intermingle with one another instead of fighting against each other. This is not a heavy English blend, but more of a middle of the road medium English. The Latakia does not overpower the other tobaccos in the blend and you can actually taste something other than the Latakia.

The bite that I was getting wasn’t horribly bad, and I have experienced worse bite from other blends. But when I smoke my pipes, I like to feel relaxed and enjoy them. If you do not get bit by Mac Baren tobaccos, then you will probably enjoy this blend quite a bit. However, if you tend to get bit from them, then be careful when smoking this blend. I Recommend it.
