G.L. Pease Union Square – Pipe Tobacco Review

The tin aroma is a nice, straight forward, lightly tangy tobacco smell. There is also a hint of, what I describe as, hay. Some might call it grassy. The moisture content is good and no drying time was needed. I took a few of the broken flakes and fully rubbed them out, loaded my pipe, and proceeded to the charring light. On the charring light, I was greeted by a nice, sweet, tobacco aroma. The flavor was a nice tobacco taste with a hint of sweetness to it. I finished lighting the pipe and settled in for a nice relaxing smoke.

From the beginning, this is a straight forward Virginia tobacco blend. There is a nice tobacco taste with a very slight hint of sweetness to it. The sweetness in this blend is not as pronounced as I have tasted in other Virginia blends. This blend is a more savory than sweet Virginia blend. About mid-bowl, this blend started picking up a bit in the strength department. At about the same time, I started picking up on something that I can only describe as a very light spiciness. It wasn’t unpleasant and I liked it. It kind of reminded me of Perique, but very, very light. It was almost unnoticeable and faded in and out. This flavor lasted till the end of the bowl. It is kind of strange because I have never heard anyone mention any sort of spiciness with this blend, but that is what I taste. I guess it could be possible that I was picking up on a little bit of a ghost from a VA/Per blend that was smoked in the pipe.

This is a very good and tasty blend. It smoked cool and dry. It did start to bite me a little bit, but that was my fault because I started puffing too fast. Once I slowed my pace back down, it stopped. This blend is to be smoked slowly. I really like this blend quite a bit and I will definitely be smoking more of it. If you enjoy straight forward tobacco and like Virginia blends, I think that you will really enjoy Union Square. I Highly Recommend it!
