G.L. Pease Barbary Coast – Pipe Tobacco Reviews

The tin aroma of this blend is nutty, sweet, and slightly fruity. It is a very pleasant aroma. The moisture content is a little on the wet side and some drying time would not hurt. The blend is a chunky cube cut. I gravity filled the bowl and proceeded to the charring light. Upon the charring light, I am greeted by a slightly sweet, slightly nutty taste and a pleasant smelling nutty aroma with just a slight hint of coffee to it. I finished lighting my pipe and settled in for the smoke.

At the beginning of the bowl, there was a nice sweet and fruity taste with a hint of nuttiness in the background. The fruity taste was not overbearing, but was just the right level. It was also not a ‘candy’ fruity taste, but a real fruit taste, like in the description when it says ‘dried fruits’. The fruitiness gradually faded and by the half way point of the bowl, it was sitting far in the background while the nuttiness was sitting more in the front. The transition was very nice, while the fruitiness was slowly and steadily fading, the nuttiness was slowly and steadily increasing through the mid bowl point. This flavor lasted until the end of the bowl. During the entire smoke, the flavor had some richness to it that stayed until the end.

During the last half of the bowl, I did pick up on some very slight hints of chocolate in the taste and aroma. I never really picked up on any traditional spiciness that usually accompanies Perique, but I did not mind. Actually I think that if there was a ‘typical’ Perique spiciness, it would have diminished the overall flavor of the blend. I would say that this is an Aromatic blend and it is done great. It is not overbearing and the flavors transition and mingle very well with each other. It burned cool, dry, and didn’t bite me at all. I really like this blend and it could easily be an all day smoke.
I Highly Recommend it!
