Cornell & Diehl Mississippi Mud – Pipe Tobacco Reviews

By Bob Tate

I see why they called this blend Mississippi Mud. The blend is almost completely black in color and kind of looks like used coffee grounds when it was in the pouch. The pouch aroma is a nice, sweet and smoky Latakia with a very light hint of pepper/spice from the Perique in the background. The moisture level was a tad on the wet side and some drying time would probably be good for it. I did not dry it and opted to smoke it as it was.

I used a two step packing method and loaded the pipe and proceeded to the charring light. On the charring light I was greeted by the nice aroma of the Latakia, but I did not taste any of the Latakia on the charring light. It actually tasted nutty to me. I settled in for the smoke, wondering where this blend was headed.

At the beginning of the smoke, I was really intrigued by the flavor of this tobacco. It is a very unique flavor. When they say ‘a flavor unlike any other’ in the description, they are correct. I was thinking that the flavor of the Latakia would be strong and in your face, but it is not. It is there and noticeable, but it is not like I was expecting it to be. The flavor is very pleasant and I like it quite a lot. This is a creamy smoke and I am picking up on the same nuttiness that I mentioned before and it is accompanied by hints of black coffee. I really like this blend so far.

This blend burns slow, very cool, and it does not even think about biting. There is a very slight spice in the background that I am detecting in the finish. At around the half way point, I also started detecting some very light hints of chocolate. This blend has some complexity to it. The flavors that I am detecting do not seem to be flavorings that are added to the tobacco, but seem to be from the tobacco itself. Those that smoke cigars, like I do, will understand what I mean. I could be wrong about no flavorings being added, so I will have to check with C&D to be sure.

This blend has all of the attributes of a good cigar. It is creamy, nutty, hints of black coffee, hints of chocolate, and a little spice. The spice did get a little stronger as the bowl progressed. It became quite noticeable towards the end of the bowl, but this is not a bad thing. The strength of the tobacco also picked up a bit towards the end of the bowl. This blend is very good and I like it a lot. I will definitely be smoking more of this blend. Unless you are the type of smoker that absolutely hates Latakia, I Highly Recommend giving Mississippi Mud a try! You won’t regret it!
