Now that autumn is here and the nights have become quite a bit cooler, I have been having the urge to smoke some of my heavier aromatic blends. I figured what better blend to smoke first than Autumn Evening by Cornell & Diehl.
The tin aroma of this blend is a very strong, sweet, maple syrup aroma. The moisture content is a bit on the wet side and I would recommend some drying time before smoking. I used a two step packing method and proceeded to the charring light. On the charring light I was greeted by a nice maple syrup type aroma and a light maple taste. I was a little worried because the tin aroma was so strong and I thought that the flavor would be as well, but so far the taste is not that strong. I settled in for the smoke.
This is a good aromatic. I can actually taste some of the tobacco taste under the maple syrup taste. It is a slight tobacco taste and it is very fleeting, but I can taste it. One of the things that I look for in an aromatic is; does the aroma of the blend transfer to the taste of the smoke. In this blend it does. Like I said, I was a little worried by the tin aroma because it was almost overpowering. But flavor wise, it ended up being just about right. Not too strong, but strong enough that you could actually taste it in the smoke.
This blend does not leave a goopy mess in your pipe the way that some aromatics do. It burns cool and did not bite me in the least and it didn’t get bitter tasting towards the end of the bowl. I don’t smoke aromatics as much as I used to, but I do enjoy a good aromatic every now and again. I especially like to smoke aromatics in the fall and winter months. This will definitely be one of the aromatics that I will smoke when the urge hits in the cooler months. I don’t think I would like smoking this blend when the weather is warm or hot because I would imagine that the flavor would be quite cloying in warmer weather, so I will save it for the cooler and cold months.
If you do not like aromatics or the taste of maple syrup, then this blend is definitely not for you. However, if you do like aromatics or even the occasional aromatic and like the taste of maple syrup, then I think you will enjoy this blend. I did and I Recommend giving it a try.
