Broken Pipe: Giancarlo Guidi (Ser Jacopo)

Giancarlo Guidi 1943-2012

We regret to inform the pipe community of the passing of Giancarlo Guidi, founder of Ser Jacopo, one of the most popular brands of Italian pipes. Guidi, in 1972 was one of the founders of Mastro de Paja, and then in 1984 he went on to create Ser Jacopo. Both brands remain highly regarded pipes today. He passed a week ago Monday, August 6, 2012, from complications of cancer. There were a few postings on overseas forums and blogs last week, but we couldn’t confirm the news at that time since all industry contacts were at the IPCPR trade show.
Mr. Guidi’s health had been failing, and he ceased working almost two months ago. His business partners were in the U.S. attending the trade show at the time of his death, but his wife was by his side as he quietly passed in the hospital. He will be missed by many in the pipe community. Pipes Magazine expresses our deepest condolences to the Guidi family, and the Ser Jacopo staff.

  • God bless, all pipe makers remind me of a certain ‘specialness’. I’m confident he had such a quality too. And, I suspect there’s worse legacy’s to leave behind than that of an pipe making craftsman. I have one Ser Jacopo masterpiece in my collection and it is dearly loved. RIP.

  • Truly a tragic loss to the pipe community. I own several Ser Jacopo pipes and they are among my most prized possessions. I will smoke one today as a tribute to this great man of briar pipes.

  • Very sad news indeed…
A loss of one of the best artists of the pipe.

  • Giancarlo Guidi was one of the brightest lights in the pipe community. His legacy will influence carvers for many years to come.

  • I am sad because a big pipemaker has left us. Pipemaker and Man, whom I admired, and also my friend. Today I smoke in memory of his pipe. Rest in peace.
