Hi Brian,
I hope you are enjoying your new mobile sound system.
I met Jeremy Reeves at the Chicago Show this past May. He is a very knowledgeable person and I enjoyed our Sunday night conversation in the tent. I agree that C&D is now a major player in the pipe tobacco field and will not be perceived as a mom and pop operation anymore. Obviously, Brian has never had any Rocky Mountain Oysters.
BTW, I picked up the Einstein Shirt. I may have to wear it at Columbus.
Rant: Don’t worry, the girls make it through college also. You have the empty house syndrome.
Nice show. I like the tobacco blender series.
Enjoyed the interview with Jeremy Reeves of Cornell & Diehl. His life story with its various jobs and relocations has had an inspiring arc toward his current position as head blender at C&D. I was fascinated by the amount of hand labor that goes into stripping leaf, and I also was much intrigued by his comments on Perique’s role in enhancing aging in Virginia and other blends. I’ve always associate C&D with their unique appreciation and creativity with burley in blends, but Jeremy’s interview expanded my sense of the variety of blends they do. Credit to Jeremy’s wife for prompting him to apply for a job clear across the country and taking up his current calling.
Loved the history lesson. The Conestoga “stogies”, the hookers at Notre Dame, and the making of roll your own cigarettes using gun powder wrappers, etc, was just sensational.
Jeremy Reeves has that Jim Cooke “old Hippie” look, but he is very well spoken. His travels were quite interesting, particularly the traveling commune aspect of it. I got the feeling he left something out when he explained how he went from someone selling pipes to being the head blender at C&D. And his life illustrates the mantra about “behind every good man is a great woman”.
For us old people you could have asked “what the heck” when it comes to tattoos and piercings. I need to know. I have a 16 year old granddaughter who wants one and I am not taking the news well.
I enjoyed his discussion about improving C&D’s quality control. They were rather widely know for having quality issues, particularly stems in the blends.
I am a big fan of Turkey Fries, but rooster?? Never heard of that. I don’t want anything to do with offal as a rule. The Japanese claim that the cheeks are the best part of any fish.
I could fully relate to the “not with my daughter” rant. Hell, I was sweating bullets when my oldest daughter went to pre-school.
Another great podcast Brian, thanks!
Loved the interview with Jeremy Reeves. What a great story of his journey ending up at C & D. Really enjoyed his participation and wisdom when he hosted the PAX Crawl in June as well.
I HATE THIS SHOW!!! Every time I have some money set aside for nonpipe related activities, you go and interview someone with an interesting “must have item”. Every DAMN time!!
Ok….I’m done….I loved the interview and Jeremy needs to be thanking his wife effusively for browbeating him into what he obviously loves. I will be raiding my change jar as soon as I get home for some of the Christmas blend as well as some more Briar Fox.
There absolutely is a double standard. My 23 year old son, couldn’t wait to get him out of the house and onto the path he chooses in life. I will always worry about him but it was time. My 7 year old daughter….I’m getting anxious just thinking about her leaving. Every college boy should know that most fathers don’t mind going BACK to prison. I’ll be praying for ya’ll and wish your daughter a safe and fun experience. Love the show.
Just finished listening to this episode and enjoyed the interview with Jeremy. Not withstanding his association with Cornell and Diehl, I really enjoy the interviews with people like him and Quincy “Danger” Worthington the most as their journey into pipes mirrors my own. The history lesson was entertaining, never realized how intertwined our history and the history of tobacco cultivation was. Thanks.
