  • Hi Brian,
Glad you had a nice vacation.
Alfred Dunhill was quite the inventor.
Jim Amash’s tobacco reviews is a great way to give back to the pipe community. His description on how different tobaccos age fits my experience. The Edward G. Robinson pipe tobacco story was great! Great Interview!
Rant – Friends/Followers of ST. Claude – I like it! Great Idea!!!
Keep up the great work now that you are back!

  • I really enjoyed both installments of your interview with Jim Amash, a very interesting guy with enduring passions in many venues.
You did a great job with the show and your questions seemed to bring out the best in Jim who was very fluid, enjoyable to listen to and a great guest. I’m looking forward to the next time that he’s on your show.

  • welcome back brian! another great show with jiminks. i admire jim and all his accomplishments especially within the pipe community, i will be on the look out for some e.g. robison tobacco just for you jim! it was also nice to hear jiminks talk so positively about the sutliff tobacco company because i recently began smoking some of their blends and i am very impressed with them. happy smoking!

  • Hi Brian!
It was sure worth the wait to hear the conclusion of your conversation with Jim. I fully enjoyed the explication of his method in reviewing tobaccos. His story of “The Further Adventure of Edward G. Robinson Tobacco” was amazing. The blend was in my regular rotation, back in the 60s and 70s. I can’t remember what the original stuff tasted like (I personally think anyone who claims he remembers what an old blend tasted like, is full of dottle), but I know that I really enjoyed it. I still have a pouch from the 80s, and one from the late 90s. Both still taste good, and are very similar. And, like Proust’s Madeline cookie, flash me back to my college days, whenever I light up a pinch or two.
In Jim’s honor, and for his nice work for the community, I’m gonna order some more.

  • Brian. Back off the ” High Seas” !! This weeks show was another great effort. Appreaciate learning about the abscure Patents of Dunhill.
Keep up the great work. Keep up those wonderful interviews. There is only one problem. Listened to Hanna interview….,. Bought some snuff and some bullets. Then listened to another interview……. Ordered a bunch of tobacco including Edward G Robinson and some Balkan Sobraine type clones. If I keep listening ( as I will ). I will either go bankrupt or I’ll have to find a job. It hurts sooooo good.
Can’t wait till tonight. Be well my friend.

  • Hi Brian,
As always, the Pipes Magazine radio show always hits the spot, but this week’s interview with Jim Amash aka Jiminks was of particular interest because it showed how the mind of a skilled reviewer works. Like many of us, I read the various tobacco reviews that pop up on the Internet, but several months ago I became aware that one reviewer consistently stood out from the pack. His reviews not only avoided the flowery prose that I, for one, find particularly tiresome, but represented a direct and incisive commentary on the tobacco being reviewed. When I noted his reviews of those tobaccos with which I had some familiarity I was able to see how he does his reviewing. It isn’t that his tastes are the same as mine, or that his reviews were congruent with my own views of the particular tobacco, but rather that he possessed the requisite skill of a good reviewer: namely, that he is able to describe the tobacco independent of his own likes and dislikes. Reading Jim’s reviews of tobaccos I had not yet smoked, I had a pretty good idea of whether to buy a tin or save my money.
I am particularly weary of those “reviewers” who attempt to describe a tobacco, and then inform the reader that they don’t particularly like Latakia blends, so they will give this particular tobacco only one star. Who cares what he doesn’t like? That’s totally irrelevant to the review! What is relevant is an accurate description of the tobacco, what it is attempting to do, and how well it lives up to its “job description.” Personal tastes have no place in the equation, unless they go something like this: “while I am not a fan of Latakia blends, I can see that this is an excellent tobacco, well blended, and I give it four stars.”
Read Jim’s many reviews, and you will see that he can review a tobacco without unnecessary verbiage while providing an accurate description of a tobacco that informs readers of what to expect. Anyone can write a tobacco review, and, sad to relate, too many do, but Jim possesses that remarkable skill of being able to do it with finesse and aplomb.
Thanks, Brian and Jim, for continued excellence.

  • Ho Brian. Truly enjoyed the interview with the lovely Scottie Piersel. She seems like a person that will continue to strive for perfection. But by the looks of the billiard Kevin bought, she’s doing just fine.
I’ve been a SCUBA open water diver since 1967. Also did much snorkeling and had some terrible sunburns on my back and legs. Almost was court marshaled off the coast of Australia for ” Destroying Government Property”……..ME. Spent a few days in sick bay before going back to fly in Vietnam.
As usually, wonderful show. Love the Chester and Lester music. It’s a great album, well keep up the great work, be safe on your trip to Vegas. Be well…..,,,,Peter
