The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – Episode 22

Kevin Godbee
Welcome to Episode 22 coming to you from Frankfurt, Germany. Brian is on a business trip for his fulltime job at Brigham USA. We will hear about that when he gets back. For tonight, we will have a discussion of English estate pipes that offer a good value. There are definitely some good brands you should consider. Our featured guest is well-known Danish pipe collector and Alaskan-Yachtsman, Richard Friedman. Since Brian and I are working on Valentine’s Day, we’d like to thank our better halves for understanding; Thanks Dale and Patricia, and Happy Valentine’s Day. Next week’s show will be on Wednesday, February 20 at 12 noon eastern USA time for International Pipe Smoking Day.

Tonight’s show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, and Cup O’ Joes. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 45-minute show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • Glad to see you are enjoying your trip. You assessment of the British pipes was quite good. Mr.Friedman’s Sea Creatures collection is quite unique and interesting. Obviously, it reflects his interest in nautical creatures and the seas. I believe I saw a few Shabbi pipes of which I have two and are both great smokers.
While watching the show I smoked a Thomas James Tree Trunk filled with McC #5100. The sound quality of the show was very good. The song selection was excellent.
    Have a safe trip home.

  • Can’t smoke…feh! What were you using your lighter for? Warmth? A scented candle? Or is it just a nervous habit?
We know what you were up to. Don’t get busted, or next week’s song will be, “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”
    A really fun show, thanks.

  • Excellent show Brian. I’m a lover of pipes and the sea so this show was right up my alley. Would love to hear more about the connection between pipes and those that make their life on the sea, past and present.
Richard’s collection of nautical pipes is impressive. I was happy to see he had a few from Rolando Negoita. The Nautilus and Octopus were awesome and I’d love to own that first sea urchin. (I’d love to own them all but I’d smoke the sea urchin)
Sound quality for the show was great but the interview was a little hard to hear in the car.
    Enjoy IPSD.

  • Another fine show with a very interesting guest. You had to admire his collection of pipes, except a lot of those pipes were shaped in such a way that they would be rather awkward to hold.

  • Another great show. Rich’s collection is incredible, I have never seen anything like it. All are works of art and I never tire of looking at them. I believe Rich has a future as a pipe maker if he chooses to, I have seen his pipes and they are remarkable for someone brand new.
Interesting info about the British estate section, as I have found some great deals with Lane Era Charatans. I picked up a couple of blasted ones that were both under 50.00 and both are fine smoking pipes. Another older British name that makes some fantastic pipes is Willmer.
