Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 580

Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 580. Our featured interview tonight is with Dave Peterson. Dave is Brian’s partner organizing the Las Vegas International Pipe Show. Influenced by his childhood friend’s father, he always wanted to be a heavy equipment operator, and that is what he became and worked at his entire life. He started smoking a pipe at 14-years old. This time influenced by Hugh Hefner. He even started with Mixture 79, but he’s come a long way since then. Dave is also one of the first members of the Pipes Magazine Forums, having joined in May 2009 when the site was only a few months old, and he is still an active participant. His forum handle is “daveinlax”, and no, he does not live in the Los Angeles airport. We are skipping our opening segment for an extended chat with Dave.

  • A wonderfully detailed Vegas report with an enlightening, in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a pipe show. Congratulations to Dave and you and all your volunteers!
“Ghost in This House” with Alison Krauss was poignant yet quite lovely.
Nice shout-outs to those who chronicled the Vegas show.
Thanks for another informative and fun show.

  • If reference to comments on show staff: The one’s you don’t see are the ones doing the bulk of the work. The ones that are facing the public are usually people who just talk up the show. Talking is easier than working but a damn sight more exasperating. Setting up your show must have been time consuming as it could be. Nice set up you had for collectors. I thought it was nice of you and Dave to bring collections to the show. Of course, if Dave had brought all the Castello’s he has you would have probably needed another room. Your Satoh collection is very nice, also.
You had a lot of countries at the show, and I am sure all the “Texicans” appreciated being mentioned separately.
Little mixed feelings towards the “Ghost” song. I realize that to most of the public Allison’s soprano is clear as a bell but for whatever reason it just doesn’t work for me. It did sound like Jerry Douglas on the dobro and any record that has him is usually good.
    Good job on the Show!!
