Morley Surcon Interview
Mo was a terrific guest! I really enjoyed his thoughtful answers to the “seven questions.” His detailed take on each of the questions showed a well grounded start to what I think will be, for him, a very satisfying embrace of the pipe smoking community. Start that club, Mo!
Nice choice of an early Rush tune.
Good show, Brian. Thanks.
Dino
Wow, a truly great show with a great guest!
First, on your comparison of Cope’s Escudo to its later self shows the dangers in aging things too long. It’s a shame you didn’t get to try any of the 4 ounce tin of Cope’s that I acquired several years ago. This tin was 40+ years old and absolutely rich. robust, and succulent. I gave some to several members of the KC Pipe Club and to a man they all said it was the single best bowl of tobacco they had all smoked. It was mouthwatering. But after being opened for a week it rapidly began to lose its potency. On your slight change in pipe preference, I too changed mine from 1/2 bent or more pipes to ones that at 1/8 to 1/4 bent. Like you I love rusticated or sand blasted pipes. Sorry, I just can’t get into straight pipes.
Mo was a real pleasure to listen to. It is amazing that you found someone who would invest all the time in studying the hobby before actually trying it. I was impressed with his knowledge of Vesz pipes. For some reason we can’t get the word out about this guy and he is a truly magnificent carver. And the teardrop shape is just a marvel.
Great show Brian, I can relate to mo In doing extensive research and jumping in with both feet. That’s exactly what I did when I started smoking a pipe. I love hearing all the new pipe smokers entering the fold. I have hope for our hobby.
Mo,
I’d be happy to meet you for a bowl on my way through some day.
We could meet up at Stoney Nakoda Reserve and sit down for a spell.
I’m a Saskatchewan Boy in Regina and I know the loneliness you speak of when it comes to finding someone to enjoy a pipe with.
I hope you were able to complete your Man Cave as Winter is relentlessly descending upon us (again) for another 7 months.
Inversely, if you happen in Regina I would be happy to host you in my heated garage by winter or Smoker Friendly Patio any other time for a bowl.
