Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 446

Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 446! Our featured interview tonight is with Rick Newcombe. Rick is a well-known author of several pipe books, and a prominent collector of Danish pipes, and vintage tobaccos. He has traveled the world visiting pipe makers, and learning their different techniques. He is also the founder and chairman of Creators Syndicate, which currently represents more than 200 writers and artists. This show is our third in Volume II in our series of “Seven Questions for Seven Experts”. Over the course of seven weeks, we will ask seven prominent pipe collectors the same seven pipe related questions, and see how their answers compare. At the top of the show, for our pipe parts segment, Brian will have a tobacco review comparing an old version, and a new version of Capstan Blue. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Seven Questions for Seven Experts

1. If you could only cellar 100 tins, would you prefer to have 100 tins of one blend, 50 tins each of two blends, 25 tins each of four blends, or ten tins each of ten blends?
2. What would those blends be?
3. What is the oldest tobacco you have smoked, and how was your experience with it?
4. How has your preference in pipes changed over time?
5. What is the pipe you own that has the most sentimental value, and why?
6. How does situation affect your pipe and tobacco choice, like outdoor versus indoor, morning versus evening, on the go or in a chair?
7. Which famous pipe smoker from the past would you like to share a bowl with? It has to be someone you’ve never met.

The Pipes Magazine Radio Show features interviews with pipe makers, tobacco blenders, pipe and tobacco aficionados, collectors, and more. Episodes air every Tuesday.

Our show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Cornell & Diehl, Missouri Meerschaum, Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 1-hour show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector.

  • This was just a sensational show! Starting with a review of Capstan Blue by Brian. His review confirmed for me not to buy this tobacco. It’s always good to have support for you biases. And besides I have already decided on the four blends to ride out of here on.
Rick is such a wonderful person to interview. He came across as a typical pipe smoker in that at times he likes one thing and others times he prefers something else. The pipesmokers in my circle are of this variety rather than greatly favoring one kind of tobacco or pipe. I thought his choice of Bertrand Russell was a very unusual choice but his explanation made sense. His Mathematica Principia was a tour de force of math logic. He won a Nobel Prize in Literature of all things. It’s always rare pleasure when you can talk to a true genius despite having major differences in political thinking and other eccentricities.
I am going to have a chat with my children to see when my Nana Ivarssen pipe will be arriving. I know she is backlogged but the thing is almost five years late in getting here. I really don’t care much whether it is a pipe she carved or herself, either way it’s good.
Calling Steve Earle a bluegrass musician is like calling Einstein a bookkeeper. But the music you selected was enjoyable.

  • Rick was, as usual, engaging, informing and entertaining. I enjoyed his animated answers to the Seven Questions.
Nice musical choice, Steve Earle is among my favorites.
    Thanks,
    Dino

  • Brian, I am a long time fan of your podcasts, and a much longer (50 year) pipe smoker. My dear wife has started enjoying your podcast. We recently watched your interview on Professor Jeremiah’s YouTube channel, and she got a real kick out of your comments on non-smokers tuning in to you podcasts. She fits neatly into that category. She (and I) love your show, and loved the YouTube presentation; but in case you get too proud, she cannot remember meeting you at the Richmond show in 2019. The downside is she now ruminates about trying a pipe, but I try to discourage that because I’m down to my last 150 tins.

  • P.S. please tell me where to send a donation for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. I sent some tobacco last year and want to do the same this year.

  • This is a fantastic and insightful interview of one of the most knowledgeable and central people in the pipe hobby. Rick has made many important contributions to our hobby and has been an opinion leader for many, many years. I greatly enjoyed his viewpoints, thoughts, and humor!
