Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 425

Drucquers Banner

Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 425! On tonight’s show our featured guests are pipe maker Julius Vesz and his son Rob. Julius is 87 years old and is still making pipes every day. He grew up in Hungary, and at the age of 23 fled to Canada during The Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He got his start when he met Richard Dunhill at a Toronto store, and was awarded Dunhill’s stem repair business for Canada. Prior to that, the stems were sent back to England, but Julius had the skill that Dunhill required. Julius maintains a supply of centuries-old briar that has been accumulated since the 1960s. His pipes are elegant handmade common, and uncommon classic shapes. Rob runs the business for his father. In our opening, “Pipe Parts” segment, Brian will discuss what not to do with your pipe in the cold.  Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

  • This helped to ease my frazzled state from watching the mind-numbing election results.
Julius’ story is fascinating, as is his admirable dedication to his craft. His beautiful pipes, made of classically aged “old briar” are simply stunning.
And, speaking of classics, Ella and Louis! This is from one of the favorites in my LP collection.
And, they’re backed by a stellar group of musicians, Oscar Peterson, piano, Herb Ellis, guitar, Ray Brown ,bass, and Buddy Rich , drums. Great choice, Brian.
Thanks for another always entertaining show.

  • Pipe parts was interesting as usual.
Julius Vesz is an amazing carver. If you haven’t gotten one of his pipes you are in for a treat when you do. I don’t know whether I believe the stuff about “dead root” briar but he certainly does. His raindrop shape is to die for.
The music was simply sublime. I’d never heard that tune before but it is amazing. But what else could Satchmo and Ella produce??

  • I forgot about the election results. I found them mainly mind numbing. Couldn’t believe them then and can’t believe them now.

  • Great show! I’ve been kind of quiet on comments, but this really deserves some praise and I’m looking forward to hearing the rest next week. I visited the Vesz shop in Toronto close to 40 years ago and loved the experience. The music was top shelf also.

  • Excellent! I love the history of these great old makers. I have one of his pipes and I think it is as good as he thinks it is. Interviews like this is why I tune in. Can’t wait for part 2.
Love the rant and agree completely.
