The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 363

Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We broadcast weekly, every Tuesday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Our featured interview tonight is with Blake Kaiser of SATX Pipe. They sell meticulously restored vintage pipes and new-old stock, unsmoked “time capsule” pieces for the discerning collector. They also have a revolving selection of new artisan pipes from all over the world. They buy and sell pipes, restore pipes, and offer layaway and consignment. Blake was signed to a label with a Christian rock band at the age of 14, and was a studio musician for many years. His inspiration to start smoking a pipe 10-years ago was the TV show, Mad Men. In Pipe Parts, Brian will give his tips on avoiding “ghosting” in your pipes. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Tonight’s show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Cornell & Diehl, Missouri Meerschaum, and Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.
We hope you enjoy our 1-hour show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes and other podcast sites and apps after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • Hi Brian,
Another great show. Blake was a great conversationalist, which makes for a great interview. I’v been looking at his web site for awhile now and he’s got some very nice pipes in the restored section, let alone in the new section.
Just one quibble: C&D still produces the Hebraica series and they are some wonderful tobaccos if I have to say so myself.
    Cheers,
    Ira

  • Good show. Good pipe parts segment.
Nice talk you had with Blake. I was somewhat amused with his answer about there being no gospel music people he could talk to during his time in Nashville. Since they have them by the thousands there I can’t imagine where he was looking. The only thing I can think of he was talking to his friends.
Man, Julie Andrews could sing. I would rather listen to her read a milk carton than any of today’s performers “sing”.

  • Hi Brian,
In a world gone crazy, I am glad to hear that a nice man like Blake can still supplement his income with some pipe cleaning and repair and selling artisan pipes from lesser known craftsmen at a reasonable price. Some things are still right in the world!
Thank you for the tips about preventing ghosting. I don’t usually wipe out the bowl as I have been afraid to damage the cake, but I have started to do this now and it works well. One of the advantages of having several pipes is that I can dedicate a couple to Virginias, a few to VA/Pers, one or two to English blends, and a nice pipe for the one aromatic I smoke on occasion. I have found it useful to smoke a new tobacco that I am trying for the first time in a Corn Cob. That way I don’t take a chance of ghosting one of my favorites for a tobacco that might not make it into my rotation.
I agree with kcghost- Julie Andrews is terrific! Cheers.
