The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – Episode 326

Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We broadcast weekly, every Tuesday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Tonight’s featured interview will be the 2nd in our series with the former owners of the now closed McClelland Tobacco company, “Storytime with Mike & Mary McNiel”. Most people know that McClelland was one of the most popular boutique pipe tobacco companies for 40-years. Their story is well told in Tobacconist Magazine. The part that only pipe show attendees know is that Mary & Mike are a joy, and a pleasure to listen to, so our show listeners are in for a real treat. In Pipe Parts, Brian will tobacco review on Mac Baren HH Burley Flake. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Tonight’s show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Cornell & Diehl, Missouri Meerschaum, and Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.
We hope you enjoy our 1-hour show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up
player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes and other podcast sites and apps after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • Wow! What a terrific follow-up conversation with Mike and Mary.
Mike’s candid story of the beginnings was just wonderful, and Mary’s poignant discussion of Carl’s decline was heartbreaking. This is important history that MUST be chronicled. (Can you hear me Mary?)
I am in anxious anticipation of the next episode.
Like Bing Crosby, Burl Ives just oozes Christmas cheer. Nice choice.
I really enjoyed the show, thanks.

  • A really top notch show.
A very thorough review of a Burley tasting but it still can’t take the vile taste of Burley out of my mouth. It is just vile to my poor meager taste buds.
A great interview with Mike and Mary again. The show wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. Mary kept trying to talk about things in a consistent time frame where as Mike wanted to jump ahead to when he was crucial to McClelland. Mike can be hard to rein in at times. They remain a delightful couple.
Burl Ives was sensational doing “Silent Night”. That was something else.

  • I remember reading once that the first person to record “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” (which became a hit for him) was singing cowboy Gene Autry. I have no idea if he was ever a pipe smoker or not.

  • I have little to add this week, great continuation of the interview. I am loving this. Very amusing rant, and I like the Home Alone tie. The little clip at the end of the show is rarely mentioned, but nice reference to A Christmas Story this week.
