I get that this is supposed to be part of anti-smoking campaign, but it seems like they’re promoting it.

Quitplan is no longer in business, not sure when and where you saw this ad, but that ad is absurd on many leaves.

Since 2001, ClearWay Minnesota has provided QUITPLAN Services with funding from the 1998 tobacco settlement. As a life-limited organization, ClearWay Minnesota will sunset in 2021, which is why QUITPLAN Services will stop accepting new enrollees after March 31, 2020. Participants currently enrolled in QUITPLAN Services will be able to continue and finish their program.

In 2019, the Minnesota Legislature provided funding for the Minnesota Department of Health to create Quit Partner, a new statewide commercial tobacco cessation program. ClearWay and the Minnesota Department of Health have worked to ensure a smooth transition from QUITPLAN Services to Quit Partner, with no interruption of services

There's no need to cite science, society has made its decision. The science no longer is needed for the issue. People do not like being exposed to the odor of smokers and their reeking, nicotine delivery systems. So, why tolerate such. We are an intolerant society these days, smoking is simply a minor irritant these days and has been handily addressed by the electorate. All levels of government get the message, the electorate doesn't like smoking and wants serious boundaries reducing their exposure.

I thought all "races" could smoke. Someone has a very thin skin. It's not all about you. And you are treading into the morass known as "politics." with such a statement.
That's what's great about living in a Constitutional Republic and not a Democracy, it protects the minority (smokers) from the will of the majority.
So the implication is that it's somehow culturally offensive to Native Americans to smoke tobacco? Sigh...

I mean, I'm a pretty progressive, PC guy and all, but what is this, the woke olympics?

Is this ad is being produced by non-natives (which it likely is), it's pretty offensive IMO to use that message for anti-smoking purposes.
I showed the add to my wife, who happens to be Apache, and she interpreted it the same as you.

You might want to check that. While smoking may cater to one's pursuit of happiness it impedes on another's. As a health risk, luxury item, and a privilege tobacco use is deemed unnecessary and is why in many areas smokers have to freeze outside indulging their desires while non smoking patrons can enjoy themselves where it's warm.

I am aware that the "Antis", or what I call "Puritans Resurrected" - people who are afraid that others are having a good time and are here to stomp it out - trigger us. What triggers me is lumping pipes and cigars in with cigs and cooking the books on second-hand smoke. Regardless, we have all adapted, built our Man or Women caves, and invited like-minded friends to join us from time-to-time in enjoying a fine cigar, adult beverage, or excellent pipe tobacco while showing off a pipe we are very proud of. That's enjoying life in one's own club. I have a cardiologist friend who shares his man cave with me, and vice versa. We have an agreement that I don't tell anyone that this upstanding cardiologist likes cigars and pipes. Its our secret. So you see, we play the game and do what we enjoy, anyway.

Warren, I couldn't agree more.

I'm not saying who funded it, but how do you know it was funded by antis?

I don't get the message as anti. There's nothing anti about the girl, her dress or the ads words. The message in fact asks for support for American Indian tradition by supporting tobacco.

However true, entirely futile as American Indians are the most marginalized group in America. The response to the ad will be, "Who gives a flip what they want."
I don't get the anti thing either. I get the say we're anti thing but really we're not. That's the vibe I am picking up. And yeah Natives or whatever you want to call them are extremely marginalized. And at the same time it's amazing how many totally white people are part cherokee princess or something like that and some how that makes them half Harry Potter (at least around here).

Depending on which relative I talk to, I'm supposedly 1/16 Cherokee. I think I'm going to get a tribal eval. Might qualify for some of that casino money.

Or maybe just relo to Qatar or some such place as in that state everyone gets a half mil a year just for sitting there and looking stupid.

I had the good fortune to live on a reservation years ago and learn about tobacco as an adult, a philosophy graduate and before I was a smoker. The ad likely implies a mindfulness regarding smoking vs. a compulsive "feed the monkey" approach. Tobacco can be used recreationally in a mindful way - it doesn't have to be ceremonial or tied to ritual - so long as it is not over-used to the detriment of the body.

First pow wow I went to, I was a little (but not a lot) confused when people were throwing cigarettes on a blanket in the pow wow circle. That started the education above and, eventually, got me to enjoy tobacco on more than a physical and emotional level.

How sad! Grown men having to hide "behind the barn" like kids, afraid someone will find out they smoke. I know some medical professionals that smoke. They simply weighed the risks and made the decision, no embarrassment or fear of discovery. Doctors, where I live, are allowed to smoke. Some even drink whiskey?

Sacred or not tobacco has medicinal properties that cannot be measured.
For Instance last week it's soothing properties prevented me from throttling an individual to the point of death who plucked that last nerve of tolerance for bullshyte.

I started seeing these pop up in OK a couple of years ago. I get the message, but I also can't help but think that it's a pretty clumsy attempt to keep money going to the tribes via smokeshops.

Well our man caves are really quite elegant - no manure. On a serious note I don't "out" people when asked for confidentiality. Some people don't want to fight the tyranny of the collective. For me, I could give a shit who knows I enjoy cigars and my pipes.

Much respect not outing your friend. The part that gets me is the collective chastises us for our tobacco use all the while toking on their bongs. I swear I'm living in opposite world.
