It was my understanding that their producing the hardwood pipes was a business expedient during a time when their corn crops didn't provide sufficient cob inventory.

Hard to believe given the billions of corn cobs produced annually. Unless they've determined to use only custom crops.

They only use white dent corn that produces fat cobs. During drought years they limit production on their larger pipes.

As to the hardwoods being discontinued.
There are the actual Maple (etc) hardwoods and there are the Ozark Mountain Hardwoods (made of birch).
I'm guessing the the actual hardwoods were the temporary ones, but don't quote me on that.
