In the semi-rural NorthEastern USA
Greetings. I’m a new pipe smoker. I started a few months ago, and as I’ve been experimenting with different blends and reading glowing reviews of different tobaccos, I’ve noticed that Samuel Gawith blends are largely out of stock on most US retail websites, and prohibited from being ordered from the UK. Why is this? Is it because of an international trade agreement, is the company out of business, or something else? Should I just ask my local tobacconist to get them from their distributor? I’m just curious as to why they aren’t available online. Thank you!
Well from what I keep hearing the reason you can't order these and some other things from the UK isn't any trade agreement but just the fact that many British credit card processors don't want to deal with the headache of taking payments for a highly regulated product in a country they don't know the regulations. It's one of those overly cautious reactions of protecting themselves from liability that doesn't really exist.

I can see the problem for a family owned business not wanting to get into long legal, international, diplomatic disputes over how much is owed in customs, fees, etc. They have a much larger potential market in the U.S. than they can address. Everything is often out of stock. Peevish people like me would rather buy blends that are regularly available, in sufficient supply proportionate to the customer base, and widely distributed. But I like some Lakeland tobaccos, not the geranium and rose aromatics, but the flake non-aromatics for example. I just don't have the time, and mostly don't have the patience, to chase a tin around the globe, despite the fact that the a the actual Lakelands are one of my favorite places in the world.

oh and anything that has rarity becomes really special to some people. How many middle of the road liquors are treated like ambrosia every single place excepting their country of origin. Frankly my experience with S.G. is that they're fine but I could live without them and still be a happy smoker.
I understand that phenomena...As a new pipe smoker, I just want to try it all...

I guess I'm just one of those people who wants what they can't (easily) have...my local tobacconist has some SG blends...just not the ones I want right now...As I'm new to the hobby, I'm also just figuring out what's out there, and what easily obtainable blends are similar to the ones I'm interested in.

This interview with Chris Gawith sheds some light on the issue (A Chat with Chris Gawith of Gawith and Hoggarth - http://pipesmagazine.com/blog/industry-spotlight/a-chat-with-chris-gawith-of-gawith-and-hoggarth/ ). However, someone earlier posted a thread here, where there is much speculation about the priority the US has vs. China.

True. A Forums member sent me an unopened tin of Brown Sugar Flake, which isn't often available in the U.S. at all, and that was one fine blend.

and not only the credit card processors, this is not the main obstacle but instead, The British Law on tobacco product distributions and sales is what causes headaches both to customers in overseas and to local Tobacconists in England as well, I've been told that in the event if licensed vendor gets caught in violating these tobacco product selling regulations he may face a £10.000 administrative fine, yet if it was found and prooved true that selling regulations were ignored on constant basis then this very tobacconist is likely to face nullification of his shop license in addition to already hefty fine

Yea, I had to....The Pease is better than most GH blends I’ve had. The topping is applied to my satisfaction. I love Ennerdale etc but the topping drowns out the leaf. My palate becomes fatigued.
