Back to the "why so cheap" question, beyond what's already been said, this is partly the economy of scale, whereby all of the materials and expertise is on hand for making more expensive pipes, so by adjusting down the materials, finish, stain, etc., a highly serviceable pipe can be made in volume at relatively low-low cost. If you had to gear up from scratch to make this same pipe, it would likely cost at least twice as much. And some money is made back in selling volume at low price rather than higher quality for more.

Also, when I read about Stanwell moving, it was all about the cost of labor. French people must just be cheap labor. Don't they just eat cheap bread and snails?

We probably will never know for sure the extent that other companies utilize these French companies in making a few lines of their product offerings. But, I have heard time and time again, that these French companies make the pipes for a lot of other companies. Dunhill comes to mind. :puffy:

Cosmic, did Stanwell first contract out to Italian pipe factories and then move to France, or did they go directly from Denmark to France? I thought the original move was to italy, but I don't remember what the source of the information was. Peterson and Dunhill/White Circle both are rumored to have work done on the continent -- Spain? Italy? France? But this isn't publicized, since people like to make the national association with the originating country. If I remember correctly, Jobeys started in France, moved to Engiand, then to the U.S., then back to France. Falcon started in the U.S. and then moved to U.K. So it goes. Such is life.
