Had a double Whopper today. I don't know why. Last time I had it, it was the height of the burger war in 80s. BK sucked back then and it sucks now. Burger looked big, but the patties were flat. That smoky/flame smell was good, but didn't translate to the taste. Basically tasteless hunk of stuff between soggy buns.

Still prefer Five Guys or local Char Grill. But in hurry, Mickey D's double quarter pounder deluxe will scratch the spot.

I haven't had a beefburger in decades, but my regular Saturday night is a fishburger and fries from a local restaurant. A piece of battered deep fried fresh haddock in a bun with everything on, a dab of tartare instead of relish, champion.

Last memorable beefburger was in Wendy's in the Strand, sometime in the late '70s* correction 1981 - they'd been open a couple of months, and were giving it all max attention as new places do.

I prefer FiveGuys to all fast food joints, but the burgers are pretty small for what I have to pay. But the fries, man! Bliss!

A fish sandwich is king among sandwiches. I do like catfish instead of haddock though. Cod would be my first choice though.

My dear old Uncle Ben was a cook for Patton’s Third Army, then a union truck driver for Hostess Bread.

I used to think about starting a franchise operation using his burger recipe.

He used ground chuck and a cast iron skillet, and butter.

And while he fried our burgers he’d tell me how pretty Aunt Mildred was back in 1940.

There was free graze sliced onions and tomatoes and lettuce and pickles and mustard, for your hand made half pound burger on a Hostess bun.

No burgers anywhere compare with his.

I think it was Monday when I was with a friend buying some books in the city. Then we went to McDonald's. They are not as attractive, suggestive, as in the photo, damn it. The meat should be tastier, not dipped in a thousand sauces and sugary spices. We had a nice time talking about literature and solid fuel ballistic missiles. rotf;)🤡

I remember going to Roy Rogers off Charing Cross Road in London for a Trigger burger circa 1980. I tried one of BK meatless burgers when they first came out and thought they tasted like someone had grilled a note book and stuck it in between 2 slices of bread. The only fast food I like in the U.S is the stuff from Dairy Queen and at a push stuff made by White Castle.

As I get older, I just cannot eat the larger burgers. Maybe my stomach has shrunken, but a double whopper would have me bed ridden for the rest of the day with pain. I do like their Whopper Jr, and I will get one if I am in the city for the day and cannot get to real food. But, I cannot even eat a whole small frie.
This trend towards bigger and bigger fast food meals is a huge turn off for me. I look for places that have the smallest burgers, if I am forced to eat at places like that.

As a kid, I remember teens and adults eating the regular McDonalds hamburgers and being fine with that. I am convinced that fast food places stretching out people's stomachs is the main reason for obesity in the US.
