I applaud all of you who stepped up to the plate and supported or still support your children. There are too many children going without basic necessities due to divorce. It's not the kids fault two people can't get along.

no but I remember the day I realized it had been 18 years since I had unprotected fun with someone who said they were on birth control when I was 17. O.k. more like four or so people. Hey camp girls where the best thing then (the university had two kinds of camps for high school kids, one was sports the other which was more fun was for kids that were good at math or science). They were here for two weeks and then gone back to where they came from. That's how I learned that the best aphrodesiac is knowing you'll never see me again and no one in your social circle will ever see me.

I paid child and spousal support both for 10 years, during which time my career suffered a temporary collapse and I rebuilt it. Never missed a payment. But I went farther than that. I also picked up my son's medical costs 100%, which I was not obliged to do. Since my ex was not a high wage earner I didn't see the need to place an additional burden on her. The financial damage went exponentially beyond $100,000. Stuff happens.
I started paying it in 1988 and finished in 1998. Only had to pay for three kids) the fourth had recently turned 18 and graduated high school). Because the ex never made a lot of money I kept paying for the others until they were all finished. Never bad mouthed the ex but was sorely tempted to at times.
I got you beat Ash, six kids. Five boys and 1 girl. Oldest is 25 and my daughter is 3. I have less than two years left of child support to the ex on the two youngest boys. I am married to my daughters mother. All total my child support will be 160000 and that doesn't include the money she got from the house and retirement.
I was given full custody of my kids and still, the state of Penn made me pay child support. No alimony. Just child support. And after suing the evil one for years, I was never given child support....and that only scratches the surface of how broken the system is.
It always makes me sad to hear these stories. Families breaking up may be the best option at some point, but it’s always sad that it got there in the first place.
and people say you'd love having kids so rewarding. You'd be a great dad. Yet all evidence points towards not having them.
The up side to all the horror stories is that your kids are worth any amount of money or trouble to you.. The greatest thing you can do! IMO
While we've all been through the wringer, my son and I upgraded for sure when we met my wife. I often find myself feeling thankful that we didn't have to suffer through that first marriage.. God is a magical guy.

I'll have roughly paid 182k by the time I'm done. Strictly support, nothing else included. Not including college either.
And the messed up part about that is, that is with 50/50 custody. Such a broken system. I will say it's starting to change, but we have a long way to go!
I always say that marriage is such a great thing that everyone should try it at least two or three times!
My youngest just graduated high school this past year. Child Support finally over! A couple weeks later, she dropped him off on my doorstep. I guess the checks were done, so she was too. Now he's working on joining the military.
