Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a poem about his tobacco pipe in the 18th century. If I recall correctly he was writing about his clay pipe and comparing the impermanence of the pipe with his own impermanence. Maybe I'll find and post it.

That would be interesting! The one, that I meant was by the poet Ludwig Hölty. Unfortunatley I do not find the text. But while looking for the Hölty poem, I just found the one that Bach had set to music:

Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the gate:
‘To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods,

from "Horatius"
Thomas Babington Macaulay

Cheers,

Chili

Here
We used to sing some "manly poems" in the army.

Burn the town and rape the women
Throw some napalm on the square

Do it on a Sunday morning
When the people go to prayer

Throw some candy to the children
And when they all gather round

Just whip out your M-16
Mow the little fuckers down

I'm better now. Been out 26 years...

Hey downsouth, I grew up on a farm in Tennessee, worked hard every day since I was a kid. And guess what: plenty of people work just as hard in cities. We rural Southerners don't have the corner on the market for manliness or toughness or anything else.

Oh, and for the record, my grandfather only took a break from farming one time: to fly bomber missions in World War II. I inherited his war medals and his poetry books.

Oh...My...Goodness. So it's not just Facebook and Twitter, It's here as well? How could something as benign (and I thought lovely as well) as asking likeminded men what their favorite "Art of Manliness" poem is turn into a dramafest?

Is there no place one can go to have dialog without unnecessary, thin skinned, opinioned drama? It was fun while it lasted...

The other angle here is an assumption of like-mindedness.

We here are like-minded only in that we enjoy the tobacco pipe.

Beyond that, we are all over the chart, just like every other sample group.

The same people that you have trouble spending time with in real life, you're likely to have trouble interacting with here when the topic strays from that one common bond.

Fortunately, our hosts do a fine job in keeping the worst of it pruned away.

The world's shortest poem?

Adam had 'em.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another day's useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?

  • The poem at the end was recorded separately. It is called Late Lament and was written by their drummer, Graeme Edge. The poem was read by keyboard player Mike Pinder. Edge wrote another poem that appeared early on the album called Morning Glory.

I had seen part of that before, I think, but not the whole thing. Thanks.

I've never considered whether any literature is "manly" or not. Too frilly - of either sex- and I'm out.

It has come up before on here, over and over, and the same argument persists... If someone has to talk about it, it can't be very manly. But, I'm all in for bad poetry. puf

I second that chili is a stew. Chili is made by being stewed ergo it is a stew.

Nevertheless I recently responded to a thread about chili by mentioning that I had made chicken noodle soup. So it goes. I'll not judge you too harshly if you think chili is a soup. It takes all kinds.
