I’ve owned Petersons before (though not currently) and their pipes have a design consistency. I know what a Peterson is. It’s a classic. What’s a Savinelli though? I like some old vintage Savinellis I’ve seen floating around but when I look at the current assortment available, I’m a bit perplexed. According to ChatGPT, Sav moves the most pipes and Peterson is #2. I don’t know if that’s true but, anyway, what is a Savinelli these days? What is the appeal?

For me it’s because I prefer Savinelli over Peterson and they are well made relatively inexpensive with filters. It’s a pragmatic approach. I don’t love them, however there are some nice Punto Oros.
The appeal is a collection of sleek and sexy classic shapes. The Italian aesthetic.
I like the straight Petersons, but to many of us, those old timey looking fat legged bent pipes just look awkward and antiquated. But, this is why we have different pipemakers. Different strokes for different folks.

A Savinelli takes classic designs and then makes the chambers too big ;-)
I’m curious; what are the main differences, in your opinion, between vintage Savinellis and modern Savinellis? I like the 1 Savinelli I have a lot. I like the button shape and size and I like the bowl shape and size. I also like how it looks. It’s a Foresta 106.
I’m not great at describing pipes. The Rebornpipes Italian pipes section has or had a bunch of estate Savs. They seem more stylish somehow. This image is from the reborn site:
Savinelli is usually considered to be a better design outfit when compared to Peterson. They don't have as large a history of making pipes that weren't quite drilled right whereas Peterson does. Laidisi has done a tremendous job of helping turn around Peterson so we will see if that uptick in quality continues. Every improvement in quality costs money which must be passed on to the consumer or reduced costs.
Peterson has made a lot of money for selling pipes for somewhat less than Savinelli. Right now, you would say both companies seem to have competent leadership.

Savinelli has always had a mass production line that has varied very little over the years, and then they have had artisan lines, and some side projects. It's like a big factory with a bunch of cousins all taking on projects. (or, that is how it was described to me).
Yeah but maybe I do want an “all day smoke.” Can’t get that from one of those cute lil Petes!
If you look through their line of production numbers, I don't think that you find any that are unusually large, compared to Petes mass produced lines. I don't even see anything other than just Peterson's mass production shapes out there currently. Does Peterson still make anything outside of their mass produced stummels?
It’s a fine, Italian factory pipe that introduces around $100. My first pipe was a Savinelli and I later picked up a 2020 Christmas one too.
They smoke fine, I like the shapes and filter options, the price was right and I appreciate that Laudisi owns both them and Peterson today.
