Picked up this bulldog online the other day as I had a hunch it was old and unsmoked.

Bit of a badge on the bowl, and a slight discolouration on the shank which leads me to believe there either was a silver collar or the intention of banding with one.

Bone screw tenon. Vulcanite stem with orofic bit.

Any ideas how to date this? Or do we just accept it’s pre 20s?

Also, the seller appears to have placed the threaded bone tenon around the wrong way which stops the shank connection lining up - listing pics showed tenon in shank, pipe arrived with tenon in stem, tenon is now stuck back in shank. Lol

How can I safely remove it so I can turn it around?

Wrap a rag around tenon and see if you can twist it out by hand. I would not think it would be that tight. Maybe put in freezer? Just be gentle.

Also noticed that the chamber has these interesting marks (vice?) about halfway down and spaces at thirds around bowl. I know unsmoked Peterson’s normally have some visible tool marks inside chambers - any other makers? Or is it just common place?

That’s neat you can see the diamond tool pattern. I never knew , or saw that before.

Probably turn of the century basket pipe. Those are chuck marks inside the chamber.
It’s unsmoked, or the bone would have yellowed.

I want to be super careful with bone but it is proving quite hard to get out. Wondering if after freezer I could cover tenon with some material and use a spanner to help grip

Place it in the freezer overnight. Wrap the bone tenon in paper towel and rub the wood with your fingers. The idea is to keep the bone cold and warm up the wood. Try to turn it after awhile.

Have tried the overnight in the freezer and yet it is still stuck. Time for alcohol I guess. The more I look at it, it appears that by being screwed in the wrong way it is causing the tenon to catch on a thread and slightly sit on an angle, causing the stem to go askew as shown in this pic
