What do You Suggest I Try Next?

So I’ve been a 30 year smoker who has smoked Lane BCA almost exclusively. But in recent years, my palate became a little more sensitive and BCA has lead to a little too much tongue bite for me. At the Chicago Pipe Show I tried TCS 50th Anniversary and loved it. Since I’ve tried 3 Stars Green and Cornell of Diehl Chenet’s Cake, but wasn’t really impressed with either. Looking for ideas of what to try next.

I literally have tried almost nothing else than what I listed above. Soooo…I like Lane BCA but there’s a little too much tongue bite. And I really like TCS 50th Anniversary. I’ve tried 3 Stars Green and Cornell of Diehl Chenet’s Cake, but wasn’t really impressed with either. This is virtually all I’ve tried in 30 years.

Given the two things I know I do like above, and the two things I’m not really a fan of above, I’m looking for ideas of what to try next.

This is a great chance to try different things. I like looking on the vendor websites and trying the most
Popular/best seller blends.

I'd suggest you try "Three Star Blue", the most popular of Iwan Reis Corporation blends for many years. It's one of my go to blends, produced by Sutliff. It's never bit me but, I usually smoke fairly slow so tongue burn has never been a problem, even with blends on the moist side. I smoke the "Blue" out of the can without any drying.

Thanks to the array of choices on the test table at the Chicago Pipe Collectors Club last night, I ended up getting Sutliff's Moroccan Spice, Cringle Cake 2022 and a bulk bag of Red Virginia 515 RC-1. That should hold me for a while.

If you really liked Lanes BCA, you could start by trying a couple of their other bulk offerings like 1Q HGL LL7 RLP 6 or BL WB (burley light without bite) a one or two ounce sample can be had for cheap try out and see if anything tickles your fancy. Same with the Sutliff bulk.

On a slightly different but related note, maybe try Mac Baren Scottish Mixture. It's not a traditional American style aromatic but does have a honey topping. I didn't care fir it the first few times I smoked it and struggled to finish the tin. But despite a bit of bite there was something there and I revisited a couple years later and now its a favorite all day any day smoke I buy in bulk. There's a reason it's been so popular all around the world for so many decades

You might consider anything Samuel Gawith in a tin. Bob's Chocolate Flake, Ennerdale Flake and at a push Grousemoor. All of them are slow burning with a pleasant room note that will not result in the wife consigning you to sleep in the porch with the family pooch. Whilst I have never smoked the tobaccos you list on a regular basis I have had occasion to smoke a bowl or two of Lane BCA. It never really appealed to me and being at the time a hard core Condor smoker whatever you gave me would have tasted of Condor due to extreme pipe ghosting. Good luck in your search.

I just finished a tin of Mac Baren 7 Seas Black. Not as sweet as BCA and also less moist, translating to no bite at all for me. Since BCA is what you know you like, and 7 Seas Black is in the same category, it's worth a shot. It definitely tastes different, but different within the same category.

Also agree to try 1-Q. I actually prefer to mix half 1-Q with half BCA, that alone might make a difference for you.
