What Do You See Here?

Reading the news with my morning coffee today I came upon a story supported with some images. This particular image puzzled me but after a few moments looking at it the penny finally dropped.

So, without the benefit of the actual story, can anyone guess what this is a picture of? The answer may well surprise you, it certainly did me.
