Smoke Of The Day: Peterson's Irish Flake and Irish Cask, mixed 50/50 in a Peterson military mount Rhodesian 999.November 2nd, All Souls' Day... an appropriate time to spend the day working in a graveyard - in this case, St Leonard's, Ludlow. Primary objective, to clear/weed the five War Graves and the access paths to them, in readiness for the annual Service of Remembrance on Monday 11th at 11 AM. All done. Some secondary objectives achieved, too. Good bunch of volunteers there today. All I had to do was smoke my pipe and direct operations (though I actually did a bit more than that). Many souls around - in the air, in the trees, among the leaves, and underground. Spent the last hour there as others might say, 'on my own' - but it's a very companionable place. :)

my great grandad is buried in a war grave very similar to the one on the right on Balgay Hill, died during the second world war... in a training accident before ever getting to Europe

my great, great grandad, on the other hand, is buried in Abbeville cemetery in France, died in the first world war and lived through perhaps some of the worst battles imaginable. Like countless Dundonians he died in the Battle of Loos, 1915

A year ago, @FurCoat gifted me a wonderful sample pack of Gawith offerings that changed the direction of my smoking profoundly.
He also included a sample of Stonehaven, which for some reason I never tried until today.
I’m glad I waited, because I doubt that last year my technique would’ve allowed me to capture the complexities that I’m experiencing as I smoke it now.
A wonderful smoke. I won’t be breaking the bank or running up debt chasing it, but if I manage the opportunity to snag a bag at an opportune time I definitely will.

Enjoying a leisurely smoke in my Kaywoodie FlameGrain Meerschaum 40 on a beautiful day.IMG_2769.jpeg

Cleaned a few pipes, enjoyed a great chat with a great friend, and smoked a bowl of year 2012 Esoterica Dunbar in a smooth straight, dark brown early 1960s Lane era Charatan Selected 43 Dublin with a black vulcanite double comfort saddle stem. This pipe was formerly owned by actor William Conrad.

Off to work with a bowl of year 2020 D&R Penhooker Silver in a straight smooth brown undated pre-Republic Peterson Shamrock 263 Canadian with a nickel band and a tapered black p-lip stem. Ice water and bergs is my drink. Going to listen to old radio shows, starting with Gunsmoke.
