I used to run both ends of a pipe cleaner through the stem, and then fold it in half and do the chamber every time I smoked. I realized I was causing my pipes to burn hotter because they weren’t building any cake at all, so now I clean them about every five or so smokes.
I probably need to clarify that my bowl cleaning isn’t really cleaning in terms of removing cake; it’s just lightly turning a paper towel to loosen dottle. Ideally, I hardly ever CLEAN clean any pipe bowl unless something’s gone wrong.

Earlier, I smoked a bowl of year 2014 Dan Tobacco Hamborger Veermaster in a smooth straight brown 1950 Dunhill 48 bulldog group 4 root briar with a black vulcanite fish tail saddle stem.

Currently, I'm near the finish of this year 2012 Dan Tobacco Treasures of Ireland: Limerick in a 2021 medium bend black sandblasted Peterson Newgrange 80S bent bulldog silver spigot with a tapered reddish brown, black striped acrylic stem.

Over the last couple of weeks I've been going through my deep storage of jars. Tonight I cracked open a jar of Nat Sherman 536 Empire English from 2019, smoked in a Savinelli Dry System 613 smooth bent billiard. Rich, creamy and smooth smoke, spicy, fruity and bready. Everything about it seems to have improved with age.

That's a great one we don't see much. I have a single tin left from the period after Nat, before its total demise, when labeled Metropolitan 536.

Smoking through some Scottish Cake gifted by @Ted Vig after pipe club tonight, in an old Nording

Now smoking Wilke No. 515 Double Shot in a smooth dark medium bend 2021 Peterson Heritage Brown POTY 4AB No. 45/500 military mount with a silver cap and a tapered black vulcanite AB stem. This is No. 515 with twice the rum of the Basil Rathbone blend. Have enough left for a bowl of so.

Had a bowl of Plum Pudding in my Paykok Sherlock. I won't be smoking PP with this pipe again, the bowl is tapering and that makes kakes in general more difficult but PP is so chunky even when rubbed out it doesn't fit well especially as it expands from charring. No big deal, it smokes ready rubbed wonderfully and does a good job with cube cut flakes. Next time I want PP I'll smoke it one of my English dedicated briars.20250220_132139 (1).jpg
