In addition to what we're smoking, pictures of us smoking it, and the like, I thought it would be a nice way to further introduce ourselves to our fellow forum folks if we shared what we're generally listening to while we smoke it.
Tonight I had just a few puffs of my Altadis Black Spice paired with one of my new Jet Streams, listening to Bear McCreary's brilliant soundtrack for Battlestar Galactica. All 6 albums of it, on shuffle. I also dredged up an early Tom Waits memory that sparked this thread.
And...go!

I usually just set the ol Pandora station to Celtic music or Irish drinking songs and let things go from there.

Excellent selections all, I knew it! And chuck, thanks for reminding me there's a whole passel of streaming radio stations I haven't explored in a while with the old radio programs!

Huge Steely Dan fan here. Own everything they've made. Lately I've been listening to local college radio stations to get a feel for what the "younger" folk are listening to. Can't say that there are any particular new artists that strike me as being original but I'll keep trying to find them.

I'm not allowed to smoke in the house, so I can pretty much only smoke while I'm driving. I often spend all day in the jeep, driving all over VA, and I don't listen to much music anymore. I find that if there is music playing, and I'm familiar with it, my brain just sort of shuts off, and I get mild "highway hypnosis". But if I'm listening to something I've never heard before, I stay more alert. So I listen to spoken word podcasts almost exclusively while driving.
My list of podcast subscriptions is as follows:

Most of these are short (~5 minutes), so I can churn through 20 or so in a day. Some others are a bit longer (Fresh air is usually an hour long, as are Comedy Death Ray, Wait Wait, and Kermode and Mayo's Film Reviews). Point is, I never run out of stuff to listen to, and it's always something I've never heard before.

@ Fred--I've been a fan of the TED talks too, been catching up on some lately. TED and a pipe are like peanut butter & jelly--a perfect combination for sitting and ruminating.
@papipe--I love the Dan myself. Caught them in concert a few years ago at Roseland in NYC; sounded just like the albums, which was good (impressive) yet bad (I could've stayed home and listened to the album). Last big live show I saw and probably ever will see.
@unclearthur -- was that you knockin at my cellar door? hehe--that song just has a whole new meaning now that I've seen some of your stashes of tobacco on this forum!
@chero -- conway as in twitty? my mom loves him. :laughat:i love his white man's 'fro. helluva singer too!

Well the only artists I've listened to today are, thanks to last nights post; Tom Waits and a young lady who's music I just discovered a few weeks ago, Nataly Dawn.

You guys may have seen her band doing the Hyudai commercials during Christmas.

papipeguy, Steely Dan is one of my favorites. Royal Scam, Aja, and Gaucho are three of the finest records of that era. If you are looking for younger artists check out Sufjan Steven's album 'Illinois'. It's entirely different than the Dan but of the same high quality musicianship and recording craftsmanship.
